MLS Miami finally becoming a reality

Major League Soccer sent a news release today setting an “important announcement on the future of soccer in Miami” for 12 p.m. ET Monday at the the Adrienne Arsht Center in downtown Miami. In addition to Beckham and MLS Commissioner Don Garber, the event will be attended by Beckham partners Marcelo Claure, Jorge Mas, Jose Mas, Masayoshi Son and Simon Fuller, as well as Miami Mayor Francis Suarez and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. MLS announced in December that Son and the Miami-based Mas brothers had joined Beckham, Claure and Fuller to round out the proposed club’s ownership group. Monday’s announcement, is expected to detail the go-ahead for the project, will be live-streamed globally on MLSsoccer.com.

It was February 5th, 2014, when many of the same participants were present PAMM, overlooking Biscayne Bay when Beckham announced he had exercised an option in his contract with MLS to purchase an expansion franchise to play in Miami. Almost exactly four years later, Miami finally seems to be on the verge of realizing its MLS dream.

Friday also saw the launch of the social media accounts for the team as well as the official website. The “Futbol Miami MLS” site is currently displaying a countdown leading to the official announcement on Monday. As of right now the team will begin play in the 2020 season at a $225 million, privately funded, 25,000-seat stadium to be built in Overtown by the Miami river.
