Miami Gardens, FL – In Miami, everyone is always a little extra on-edge when the New England Patriots come to town. First of all, there were way too many Patriots fans at the game today. I had to double check if it was, in fact, a Dolphins home game. Second of all, of course, the Patriots scored on their first drive (Stephen Gostkowski missed that PAT though). But best of all, the Fins got that W! The Miami Dolphins, sitting at 6-6 coming into this game, need every win they can get if they’re going to make the playoffs. According to Elias Sports Bureau, the Patriots, sitting pretty at 9-3 (What a surprise), were one win away from joining the 90’s Atlanta Braves as the only team in American major sports history to clinch 10-straight division titles. However, that’ll have to wait another week, as the Fins won’t let them have it just yet.

Like I mentioned above, of course, the Patriots scored on their first drive. However, Gostkowski missed the extra-point and the Fins took the lead on their first drive. Are you more surprised that Gostkowski missed the PAT or that the Fins actually scored on their opening drive against the Evil Empire? The rest of the game was just back and forth. They score, we score, they score, we score, etc.

In fact, the Fins went into the half down 27-21. The game would quite literally come down to who could most capitalize off of the other teams’ mistakes. The Patriots scored a touchdown after blocking a Dolphins punt attempt but were only able to score two field goals off of two other Miami punts. Meanwhile, every Fins touchdown came in response to a New England touchdown, except for the last two. The touchdown that put the Fins Up 28-27 came after Gostkowski missed a 42-yard field goal that would’ve put the Patriots up 30-21. Instead, Miami came back and took the lead. The final Fins touchdown – the game-winner in the final seconds of the game – came after Miami’s defense held the Patriots to a goal-line field goal. Had New England scored a touchdown, it would’ve been a two-possession game with seconds left, and that would’ve been the game. Instead, Miami’s defense fought until the end and gave their season-struggling offense a chance to make a miracle happen. They also saved Coach Adam Gase, who earlier in the game chose to throw on 3rd and 1, leading to a punt, instead of running it while leading 28-27. What ensued after that late 4th quarter goal line stance will forever be known as the Magic City Miracle.

The Miami Dolphins only had 0:07 seconds left on the clock. Down by five, they had enough time for one play. Ryan Tannehill gets his marching orders from the sideline, “Boise”. Tannehill receives the snap, passes to Kenny Stills, who laterals to DeVante Parker. Parker immediately laterals to Kenyan Drake, and he was off to the races! In all, he made seven guys miss on road to his game-winning touchdown, most notably, Gronk (out there to prevent a hail mary), who stumbled while trying to catch up to the Dolphins speedster.

Fun Fact: Drake’s touchdown was the first in Miami Dolphins history with no time remaining in regulation. Tom Brady must hate Miami. He’s now 7-10 vs. the Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium (or the many other names the stadium has sported). Miami is now 7-6 this season, tied with Baltimore for the final playoff spot, but the Ravens own the tiebreaker, which comes down to the number of touchdowns scored. The Ravens play Tampa, then travel to LA to play the Chargers, and finally, host Cleveland to end their season.

Next up, the Fins travel to Minnesota to face the Vikings and try to accomplish something they’ve only done once this season, win on the road. They return home the week after for their home finale, hosting the 4-9 Jaguars, who have lost eight of their last nine games, and also only have one road win this season.

A win like this is exactly what the Fins needed at this point in their season. It could spark a nice little run, and hopefully, a playoff birth!
