MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – South Florida Motorsports (SFM), in collaboration with Verizon, hosted nearly 90 local students for a STEAM Day at the Miami International Autodrome (MIA) on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Students in grades 2–5 from Dibia DREAM and the Embrace Girls Foundation participated in an interactive learning experience focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and math.
Students were welcomed by FORMULA 1 CRYPTO.COM MIAMI GRAND PRIX President Katharina Nowak, Vice President of Community Affairs Kim Miller and Miami Gardens Vice Mayor Robert Stephens III. Throughout the event, students rotated through hands-on learning stations designed to bring STEAM concepts to life. Participants built solar-powered miniature race cars in an engineering lab and explored innovation and real-world augmented reality applications through Verizon Innovative Learning (VIL).
As part of the experience, students also received a behind-the-scenes tour of MIA facilities, including race control, the Paddock Club, team garages and pit lane – all used during race weekend for the FORMULA 1 CRYPTO.COM MIAMI GRAND PRIX. The event concluded with students testing their engineering skills by racing their solar-powered cars down pit lane.
All participating students were from Miami Gardens and the greater Miami-Dade County area, engaging them in experiences designed to connect classroom learning with the engineering and technology behind Formula 1 and motorsports.
STEAM Day at MIA powered by Verizon is part of SFM’s MIA in Schools initiative, the organization’s community education program created to expand STEAM learning opportunities for students across South Florida. As the promoter of the FORMULA 1 CRYPTO.COM MIAMI GRAND PRIX, SFM leverages the excitement of Formula 1 to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and motorsports professionals by connecting local youth to real-world STEAM learning through hands-on activities and immersive experiences at the Miami International Autodrome.
