NU Stadium- The Herons regained their flight with a dominant 2-0 victory over Mexican powerhouse Cruz Azul, claiming the Campeones Cup crown. It was a magical night as Lionel Messi scored his 100th goal for Inter Miami, Casemiro scored his fourth header of the season, and Kily González won his first game and trophy with the club.
Much-Needed Win
Inter Miami was sputtering into the Campeones Cup match, with four losses, four draws, and just two wins in its last 10 matches across all competitions. The team was awaiting the arrival of its new head coach, Cristian “Kily” González, announced weeks earlier. González officially took over just one day before Miami clashed with Cruz Azul. Despite the limited time with their new manager, the Herons delivered a masterful performance, with González’s philosophy and style of play clearly evident from the opening whistle.
In his inaugural press conference, González said he wanted a more compact and “balanced” team that knew how to handle the ball well. Inter Miami did just that, keeping a clean sheet while dominating Cruz Azul on its way to a convincing victory. It was a much-needed win for Miami, the type of win that can turn a season around.
González mentioned that he has been observing #InterMiamiCF for a while now & has also been analyzing the opponents..

Casemiro scored his fourth goal of the season off a Lionel Messi corner kick and turned in a strong performance at center back for Miami. He provided a calming presence in the backline while using his composure and technical ability to smoothly play the ball out of the back.

Rodrigo De Paul, “El Motorcito,” was all over the pitch in midfield, winning duels, disrupting Cruz Azul’s attack, and tracking back effectively on defense. He was instrumental in linking Miami’s progression from defense to attack and seamlessly transitioning back the other way. De Paul turned in a magnificent performance against Cruz Azul.

Dayne St. Clair appears to have found his groove with Inter Miami. After spending a stretch of matches on the bench under Guillermo Hoyos, St. Clair has reclaimed his place between the posts and is flourishing in goal. He came up with several key saves against Cruz Azul, but his biggest impact went beyond the stops. St. Clair commanded his penalty area, controlled his box with authority, and exuded the confidence and composure of a goalkeeper firmly in control of his game.
Expectations at #InterMiamiCF will always be to win trophies 🏆, & yes “Defense wins championships”…#MLS #Lemoncitylive https://t.co/ipUqedpMTI
