Inter Miami faced archrival Orlando City last Sunday night in an instant classic that saw Lionel Messi score a brace in his first match in Orlando. After falling behind 2–0 just 24 minutes into the game, the Herons soared back to defeat the Lions 4–2 with a dominant second-half performance. Messi was, unsurprisingly, the hero of the night, but Mateo Silvetti, Telasco Segovia, Micael, and head coach Javier Mascherano each played pivotal roles in the fantastic victory.

The Comeback

Orlando opened the scoring early, capitalizing on a misplaced pass from Rodrigo De Paul to take a 1–0 lead.

Shortly thereafter, Martín Ojeda poked the ball past Dayne St. Clair to make it 2–0, and it appeared Inter Miami might be run out of the building. Instead, the Herons regrouped and flipped the match in the second half.

Javier Mascherano turned to Mateo Silvetti off the bench, and the move paid immediate dividends. Silvetti unleashed a banger to cut Orlando’s lead to 2–1 and shift the momentum in Miami’s favor.

The Goat tied the match less than ten minutes later with a spectacular strike surrounded by Orlando City defenders.

Telasco Segovia put Miami ahead in the 85th minute, calmly curling a beautiful shot past the goalkeeper and into the Lions’ net to make it 3–2 Inter.

Lionel Messi put the exclamation point on the Herons’ epic comeback with the 70th free-kick goal of his career, sealing a 4–2 victory. What began as an abysmal first-half performance turned into an instant classic for Inter Miami in the second half.

GOAT In Orlando

Lionel Messi finally played his long-awaited first match in Orlando, and it was well worth the wait. The Argentine superstar not only scored the game-tying goal but also buried a free kick to seal the victory for Miami. Orlando fans had long joked that Messi avoided playing there, in part because Inter Miami had never won at their stadium. The GOAT put that narrative to rest with two strikes from his legendary left foot. To top it all off, Messi even delivered an uncharacteristic taunt toward the Lions’ bench after his second goal.

Instant Gratification

Javier Mascherano made a key adjustment to start the second half, bringing on Mateo Silvetti in search of a spark. Silvetti ignited the comeback with a thunderous strike that energized the Herons. He proved vital not only for the goal but also for his relentless intensity and work rate. His presence stretched the field for Miami and forced Orlando City onto its heels. Despite appearing slightly tweaked physically, Silvetti still delivered for the Herons. If this performance is any indication, it could be a big season for him. His versatility and talent give him the potential to be a true difference-maker.

Super Segovia

Telasco Segovia will play a crucial role in determining whether Inter Miami’s season is a success or a disappointment. Segovia has shown a natural chemistry with Lionel Messi, consistently finding the right spaces to receive the ball and creating scoring opportunities through their connection.

While he is already a dangerous attacking presence, the next step in his development is becoming a more complete two-way player. Improving his defensive discipline and overall balance will be key to his growth. If Segovia can continue evolving on the defensive side of the ball, he could position himself for a return to Europe in the future.

Mascherano MasterClass

Javier Mascherano saw his team head into halftime down 2–0 on the road against rival Orlando City, with the Herons’ backs firmly against the wall. The previous week, Inter Miami had suffered a 3–0 road loss to LAFC, and another blowout defeat—especially to Orlando—would have been a humiliating result. Instead, Mascherano made bold adjustments that changed the dynamics of the match and sparked Miami’s remarkable comeback.

Mateo Silvetti was introduced to inject energy into the Herons’ attack, with Noah Allen coming off the pitch. The substitution triggered a tactical shift that ultimately changed the outcome of the match. Mascherano moved to a three-man back line featuring Micael, Maximiliano Falcón, and Facundo Mura while committing more numbers forward in attack. It was a necessary adjustment given the scoreline, but it came with significant risk.

Micael shifted to the left side of the defense, Falcón anchored the middle, and Mura patrolled the right. The trio held firm despite being left in frequent man-to-man situations against Orlando’s talented attackers. Mascherano’s tactical gamble paid off, helping Inter Miami engineer a dramatic comeback and earning him Matchday Coach of the Week honors.
