MIAMI, FL – On the heels of a 9-2 win last night over the Chicago White Sox, the Miami Marlins picked up where they left off in today’s Wednesday afternoon game. At the plate, the Marlins bested their game yesterday, hitting the double-digit column in runs along with 12 hits.

Delivering on both sides of the ball, the Marlins won big today, 10-0 against the team down in Southside. On the mound, Sandy Alcantara was electric, tossing a “Maddux” in the rubber match against the White Sox, finding themselves on a hot 5-1 start in sole control of the National League East.

Fightin’ Fish Open the Game with Four Runs

Sandy Alcantara made his second start of the season in today’s getaway game against the White Sox. Following a 10-pitch 1-2-3 inning to open the game, the Fightin’ Fish got the party started in the bottom of the first with four runs.

It all started with the MLB’s leader in RBIs. Liam Hicks entered this game as one of Miami’s hottest hitters, with a .363 average and tied with a league-leading eight runs batted in.

With runners on the corners, Hicks gave the Marlins an early lead in this ballgame, with a single to drive in Jakob Marsee.

In the next at-bat, Connor Norby kept the rally going with his second double of the season, scoring Otto Lopez.

Moments later, Owen Caissie scored both Hicks and Norby on a base hit, marking it a 4-0 game. Caissie has shown the Marlins front office why he was the Chicago Cubs’ number one prospect. Entering today’s game, he was leading the Fish with a .400 average and had 6 RBIs.

Liam Hicks Does it Again and Again

In the subsequent inning, Hicks showed exactly why lightning strikes twice. On a 3-1 pitch, he took a slider to the yard house. It barely went out, needing an umpire review for confirmation, but the way he had been swinging the bat over the homestand, it was a no-doubter.

He then hit his fourth RBI of the game in the sixth, giving him a total of 12 to lead the MLB. Hicks is making a name for himself across the majors early on this season.

Javier Sanoja Carries WBC Success

Javier Sanoja didn’t get a whole lot of playing time in the World Baseball Classic, but when he was on the diamond, he made it count. The Venezuelan utility man went 3/8 at the plate in three games with two runs, a home run, and a stolen base.

He entered the game with a .556 average and shot it up to .600 with a two-run RBI in the third inning, making it an 8-0 blowout contest at the time.

Otto Lopez Multi-Extra Base Hit Game

Otto Lopez had his best game of the young season today. He went 2/4 with both hits totaling seven bases. In the sixth, he hit a triple on a liner to left field, and in the eighth, he capitalized on his first homer of the season, traveling 395 feet to cap off the 10 runs put on by the Marlins.

Sandy Alcantara Back in CY Young Form

If his past two starts are an indication of what’s to come in 2026, then you won’t be disappointed to watch Sandy Alcantara pitch every five games. Following his impressive Opening Day 7.0 inning start, where he allowed four hits and a run on five strikeouts, Alcantara outperformed himself with a complete game three-hit shutout.

It was hard to recall if he ever had a bad moment in this game. Alcantara was fierce and to the point on the mound. Aside from hitting one batter, his command was sharp, not allowing a single walk. He threw 69 strikes today in contrast to just 24 balls. Not much can go wrong on a day you’re able to get five 1-2-3 innings.

He struck out seven hitters and had 15 swing and misses this afternoon. His heater maxed out at 98.4 miles per hour. Out of his 93 pitches today, he utilized his changeup (26) and fastball (24) the most, especially against left-handed hitters. Alcantara had at least a 50% whiff rate on his slider, sweeper, and cutter. His sinker was most effective against righties 26% of the time.

Sandy Alcantara had a nearly even groundout/flyout ratio, getting his opponents to hit on the ground 10 times and in the air nine times. Something he really took discipline in today was getting ahead in counts. He threw 21 first-pitch strikes, having a rate of at least 50% with five of his six pitches.

Today’s complete game was the first in Major League Baseball this season and his first since 2023. He now has 13 career complete games and five shutouts. Alcantara also tossed his second career ‘Maddux,’ a complete game with fewer than 100 pitches.

Controlling Their Own Destiny

The Marlins really took advantage of their runners in scoring position opportunities in these last two games against Chicago. Today, they went 5-for-12 as a team and totaled six extra-base hits. Every hitter in the starting lineup reached base today at least once.

Miami leads the MLB with a .290 average, .482 slugging percentage, and an .847 OPS. They are second to the Brewers with a .365 on-base percentage.

On the flipside, the Marlins lead the MLB with only nine walks allowed and are tied with a 0.83 WHIP. They lead the NL with opponents hitting just .185 off them.

The Fish are cruising with a 5-1 start and in control of the National League East division.

On Deck

Following an off day tomorrow, the Marlins will square off in the Bronx to play against the Yankees this weekend. The Marlins seek to follow up on last season’s surprise sweep against New York and become the only team in the majors with a current winning record in the regular season against the Yanks.
