Miami, FL – FIU men’s basketball is in for quite the change for the 2026-2027 season. With new Head Coach Joey Cantens leading the charge and several key departures, FIU still has major roster gaps to address. The first step for FIU is making sure Coach Joey has his new basketball staff lined up and ready to go for the transfer portal period. Here are some quick hits introducing FIU’s new men’s basketball coaching staff.

Assistant Coach- Jabril Durham

Jabril Durham was named the assistant coach for Joey Cantens first season coaching the FIU Panthers. Durham spent last season as a graduate assistant under Luke Loucks for FSU basketball team, pursuing a graduate certificate in Athletic Coaching. A former player himself at the University of Arkansas and a pro overseas, he has a very impressive track record. As a student athlete, he became the fourth player in Arkansas history to reach 200 assists in a single season. Once he went pro and began his overseas career, he took Latvia to a championship, earning himself Finals MVP.

Assistant Coach- Lane Below

Lane Below was another assistant coach that Joey Cantens hired for the upcoming season. Lane spent his previous two years as the head coach of Gulf Coast State, finishing with a 50-18 record. A former collegiate athlete, Lane played for Ole Miss back in 2018, playing two seasons under Andy Kennedy. Setting his players up for bigger opportunities, by the end of the 2024-2025 season, nine Commodores earned scholarships at four-year institutions, and seven moved on to NCAA Division I programs. Coach Lane will head to the 305 to start another chapter as a FIU Panther.

Assistant Coach- Scouting- Kenny Boynton

A familiar face in the state of Florida, Kenny Boynton, has been hired as an assistant coach for scouting at FIU. Kenny is a former UF player who currently sits second in UF history with 2,033 career points. Similar to Jabril Durham, Kenny also played overseas. For the last decade, he played in the Chinese Basketball Association before accepting his first coaching role with FIU. Kenny will be responsible for scouting the upcoming talent and assisting with putting together a roster. With FIU only having just a handful of players on the active roster, Kenny has his work cut out for him in his first coaching stint.

Assistant Coach- Player Personnel- Adrian Davila

Adrian Davila will be the new assistant coach for player personnel for the upcoming season. Adrian comes to the 305 along with head coach Joey Cantens from Daytona State College. He helped coach the Falcons to a 27–8 record and their first NJCAA Tournament appearance in 25 years. Davila specializes in player development, consistently improving players’ shooting percentages and assist-to-turnover ratios. His development has led to five First Team All-Conference players, six Second Team All-Conference players, two NJCAA All-Americans, and one Conference Player of the Year.

FIU 2026-2027 Season Outlook

FIU has put together an experienced and well-rounded coaching staff for the 2026-2027 season. The next steps are to fill out the rest of their roster through the portal and recruitment. As of 6/24/26, FIU has announced several transfer commits, with more to come. The Panthers will look to make a run at the C-USA championship this season, with a new culture, coaching staff, and player personnel.
