Marlins Fail to Comeback from Late Jarren Duran Grand Slam

MIAMI, FL – The Marlins’ pitching tried its best to limit the Red Sox from having too many scoring chances. Unfortunately, the opposing pitchers did better against Miami. Late in the game, Jarren Duran hit a grand slam in extras, and the Marlins once again faltered on scoring opportunities, losing 7-3 to the Red Sox.

Mickey Gasper Goes Deep Twice

Having done damage in last night’s ballgame, Gasper did even more today. In the second inning, he hit a solo home run off Tyler Phillips’ sinker to put the Red Sox up 1-0.

Then in the sixth, he hit another home run, this time off Tyler Zuber, putting Boston ahead 2-1. The long ball traveled far at 418 feet. He has just five homers this season, but two of them came tonight.

Red Sox Bats Limited in Chances

Aside from Mickey Gasper, the Red Sox bats struggled to move runners. Tyler Phillips made the start, going 4.2 innings, allowing just three hits, a run, and three walks on a career-high of seven punchouts.

Phillips totaled 14 swing-and-misses. The splitter was his top pitch, recording four strikeouts on 23 pitches. Not that far behind was the sweeper, which was used 22 times and got two strikeouts.
He threw the sinker 20 times, and the curveball was used 18 times, getting a strikeout on the pitch. The Red Sox only got two hard hits against Phillips.
Victor Vodnik recorded a strikeout at the end of the fifth. Zuber pitched a complete inning in the sixth. Jack Ralston tossed a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh. Michael Petersen completed the eighth inning while Josh Ekness had a hitless ninth.
Calvin Faucher pitched in the tenth and wound up getting the loss all because of one play. A passed ball from Brian Navaretto allowed Connor Wong to score the go-ahead run at the time.

Marlins Once Again Fall Short in Run Support

The Marlins were hitless until the fifth inning when Xavier Edwards hit a ground-rule double. However, the opportunity was wasted in the next at-bat when Leo Jimenez reached on a fielder’s choice, and Edwards advanced to third, only to be tagged out.

Miami would get a run in the inning after loading the bases. Brian Navarreto hit a sac fly to bring Jimenez home. Still, rather than 1-0, the game could’ve been 2-0 if not for the costly baserunning mistake.

Heriberto Hernandez tied the game for Miami in the sixth with a solo home run. In the midst of a career season, he has 20 home runs and 54 RBI.

It wasn’t until the 10th inning that the Marlins made some noise again. In a 3-2 count down to his last strike, Javier Sanoja struck out swinging but reached first on a wild pitch, causing Navarreto to score.

For nearly half the game, Miami didn’t get any hits, and they came up short when they could have advanced runners. They went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 11 runners on base.

Cade Gibson’s outing in the 11th quickly got off to a rough start and gave the Red Sox a reason to fight. Jarren Duran made him pay with a grand slam. The whole ballpark knew that ball was gone the moment it was hit and ultimately changed the course of the game.
