Marlins Fall Short of Victory Against the Athletics

MIAMI, FL – Fresh off a wild walk-off grand slam victory against the Athletics, the Miami Marlins came into today’s game looking to carry their home record over the .500 hump.

We have already seen in specific games so far this season how the Marlins bats are able to bring the team back into the game. Prior to the game today, Marlins starters had allowed 4+ runs in the past eight games. If the Marlins were to take the series win over the Athletics, then they would have to capitalize on insurance runs.

Unfortunately, the bats were relatively quiet this afternoon as the Marlins fell short of victory against the Athletics.

Anything more than five innings pitched, and a win would’ve been considered an automatic success for Edward Cabrera today.

In his previous four starts this season, Cabrera had struggled to either reach the fifth inning or get through it all together. A big part of that was him already being in the 80-90 pitch range by the time he got pulled in those starts.

Today against the A’s, he threw 86 pitches in 5.2 innings of work. He did allow seven hits, but only ran into a little bit of trouble in the second inning when he gave up a two-run double to Gio Urshela. However, he threw his lone walk of the game in the sixth inning and was able to lower his ERA. Regardless of the no-decision, Cabrera’s start today looked like his most comfortable outing of the season.

DANE-o-mite delivers

Dane Myers has quietly been putting up some impressive numbers for the Marlins this season. He was hitting .344 coming into the game, which would be eligible for third place amongst batting average leaders if he had more at-bats. Not only that, but he’s tied with Lake Bachar and Kyle Stowers with a WAR of 0.8.

His two-run double here in the 4th inning showed just how reliable he can be in changing the scope of a game.

Soderstrom puts the A’s aboard for good

The difference maker in this game belongs to Tyler Soderstrom’s solid pinch-hit at bat. Soderstrom wasted no time, swinging at the first strike he saw to give the A’s their lead back and ultimately win 3-2.

Nick Kurtz scored the run after hitting his first-career triple. The triple may have been prevented if not for a miscue on the play by Kyle Stowers in left field.

The 13-20 Marlins will host a familiar team that they had just visited last week. The 23-10 Los Angeles Dodgers come into town as the hottest team in the National League. They have an ongoing seven-game winning streak and look relentless at the plate and on the mound.

Dodgers players to watch:

Yoshinobu Yamamoto – Yamamoto has dominated on the mound so far in his sophomore campaign in the MLB. Seven starts in and he finds himself leading the league with a 0.90 ERA while his opponents are only hitting .171 against him.

Shohei Ohtani – The Marlins won’t be facing him this season on the mound, but he is just as dangerous in the batter’s box. Ohtani has been most productive with his baserunning skills, leading the majors with 35 runs while also recording three triples and stealing nine bases.

Teoscar Hernandez – Hernandez leads the National League with 33 RBI and has displayed a good mix of power and contact with his nine home runs and .306 batting average.
