MIAMI, FL – Today, marked Opening Day for the FIU Panthers against the Villanova Wildcats. Both teams battled it out trading runs for the majority of the game.
Unfortunately for FIU, things did not go their way as they failed to get enough hitting support. The pitching for FIU was the main struggle for them in their Opening Day loss to Villanova.
Lucas Reyes Drives in First Run for FIU
The offense for FIU started off with a bang. Andrew Ildefonso got it started by by reaching first due to a Villanova error and then reaching second base. Reyes drove him in, hitting a high fly ball that bounced off the right center fence for a triple.

Command an Issue for FIU Pitching
Ureña got through the first inning with ease, striking out the first batter he faced and allowing just one hit. However, the Wildcats put him to work in the second inning.

He surrendered a hit to John Freitag to start off, then issued a bases-on-balls walk. After a fielder’s choice left runners on the corners with one out, Mark Giallusi got the party started for Villanova with a big double.
Notably, Jeremy Ureña struggled to find a rhythm. He did record a strikeout after the RBI, but then issued another walk. Immediately after that, he threw a wild pitch. Aidan Barry scored to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead.
Ureña was able to set the tone a bit in the third inning, but he eventually got pulled with two outs and two men on base. He finished the game allowing two earned runs, three walks, and four punchouts in 2.2 innings pitched. 37 of his 66 pitches were strikes.
Tyrus Riley came in relief and ran into trouble with Jack Roventini all within a few sequences. First, he gave him a free pass to first base, and then he had consecutive wild pitches, allowing him to reach third base. Roventini then scored off an error from FIU second baseman Cooper Rasmussen.
Riley never got into too much additional trouble, but he continued the trend that was a problem for FIU pitching all night long. The command issues got to him as well. He ended the game allowing two hits, an unearned run, five walks, a strikeout, and two wild pitches in three innings of work. Only 25 of 60 pitches were in the strike zone.
Panthers Take Advantage of Wildcat Blunders
In light of the Panthers’ struggles on the mound with walks and wild pitches, they turned those same weaknesses into strengths at the plate.
They were able to start a fifth-inning rally. Marc Hersh singled to left field. Then, Rasmussen got hit by a pitch, and Ildefonso followed up with a base hit to third base. It all paid off when Cole Cleveland put his batter’s eye to good use for a bases-loaded RBI walk.

In the sixth inning, the Panthers took care of business once again. Samuel Fischer safely reached first base via error and then advanced to second. After advancing to third on a sac bunt, he was able to capitalize on the Wildcats’ wild pitch and tie the game up at 3.

Villanova Scores Go-Ahead Runs
The Wildcats did just that with two men on base and nobody out. Whooley came up to the plate and hit a towering home run to left center, giving Villanova the go-ahead runs they were looking for.
Afterwards, the walks started to pile on for FIU, and they allowed two stolen bases. Carter Richey extended the Wildcats lead to 7-3 with the sac fly.
It was a tough outing for Tracen Cameron as well. He gave up two hits, four earned runs, three bases on balls, and recorded a strikeout.
Final Tidbits
Hersh delivered with a late RBI in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 7-4, but the Panthers couldn’t get hits in bunches. They didn’t come all night for FIU, as they only finished with five of them.
Villanova finished the game, leaving 13 runners on base and even committed four errors in the game. However, the Panthers walking 11 batters and going just 2/14 in runners in scoring position was a big factor in their loss.
