Miami Marlins continue turnaround sweeping New York Yankees

Miami, Florida – The Miami Marlins swept the New York Yankees for the first time in franchise history, the culmination of an amazing feat weeks in the making. The victory brought the team back to an overall record of 55-55 for the season, after grinding their way back from 16 games below .500 on June 11. The sweep is also memorable with the induction of former coach Jack McKeon into the Marlins Hall of Fame.

McKeon was called to lead the Marlins on May 11th, 2003, dramatically turning their fortunes around and guiding the team to a World Series championship over the Yankees that same year. For his miraculous effort, Jack McKeon won National League Manager of the Year for the second time in his career. The Bronx Bombers, 18-27 since June 13th, were hoping to turn things around themselves, but found heavy resistance in South Florida tumbling in the standings. Looking back, it’s impressive what Miami has achieved thus far.

Lowest of the low

Rewind the clocks to early June. When Miami started the month, the Fish still had the services of Connor Norby, Ryan Weathers, and Max Meyer. Griffin Conine was already done for the season. The Marlins lost the series against the San Francisco Giants. Afterward, they got swept by the Colorado Rockies, the worst team in Major League Baseball. This had to be the franchise’s lowest point in the season. I have to admit I was greatly disappointed.

I was convinced the team was firmly en route to a 100-loss season and big-time sellers at the trade deadline. Things went from bad to worse with Meyer landing on the IL with a left hip impingement. Miami went on to drop the Rays and Pirates series. Weathers getting hit in the head by an errant throw in the first inning by catcher Nick Fortes was symbolic of how the season was going. He was ultimately placed on the 60-day IL with a left lat strain.

There were bright spots, however. Eury Perez returned on June 9th, pitching for the first time since September 20th, 2023. Sandy Alcantara, meanwhile, was performing a lot better than earlier in the season, tossing six scoreless innings against Pittsburgh. Miami had lost five straight series and was 2-8 for the month thus far, but the stars were slowly aligning. A sweep of the Nationals was a shot in the arm, and although they lost three of four to the Phillies, they defeated the Braves before sweeping the Giants and Diamondbacks, ending the month of June 14-12.

High point (so far)

July brought more success as the team finished 15-10 and saw outfielder Kyle Stowers selected for the MLB All-Star Game. Stowers won NL Player of the Month sizzling with a .364 batting average and 1.269 OPS that included 10 home runs and 20 RBIs. He wasn’t the only successful hitter. Catcher Agustín Ramírez leads NL rookies in several categories. The pitching has significantly improved too. Edward Cabrera, Eury Perez, Calvin Faucher, and Anthony Bender have been big pieces in this regard.

When the trade deadline came around, the Marlins largely held on, shipping out Fortes and Jesus Sanchez. No matter what happens going forward, this team has proven it can compete. It’s like they took a page out of the Miami Hurricanes baseball team. For those who don’t know, UM baseball was in a nasty rut before going on a run, making it to the Super Regional. For the Fighting Fish, the players are hungry and want to prove everyone wrong. Fans should be excited for this team again. I know I am.
