MIAMI, FL – The Marlins are coming off a 3-3 SoCal road trip that was a mix of solid wins, comebacks that fell just short of victory, and an embarrassing six-run lead that got erased. Meanwhile, the Giants just got swept in Detroit and come into the series looking to get back in rhythm. It was an unpromising night for the Fish. Cal Quantrill could strike out seven batters, but it was all for nothing as the Marlins failed to produce runs in this contest.

Quantrill delivers a quality start

Cal Quantrill impressed in his start tonight. The 30-year-old threw 95 pitches, his highest pitch count of the season. In his five innings of workload, he struck out a total of seven batters, a season high. Five of those came off the splitter.

Quantrill only ran into trouble twice during the outing. Heliot Ramos hit a triple in the first inning that was caused by a missed dive attempt by Kyle Stowers, along with a bad throw passed the infield. Ramos would go on to score thanks to Wilmer Flores single. In the fourth inning, Matt Chapman smacked a low slider well over the fence for a home run. That was just good timing on Chapman’s part.

Eight hits are a lot for Quantrill to give up in a game, but he bounced back any time those would occur. He displayed a good command with great pitch selections and allowed just a single walk. Cal Quantrill never lost his cool on the mound.

He can thank Dane Myers on defense for backing him up tonight. His double play in the outfield saved what would’ve been an eventual run.

No offense to show for

The offense was quiet all night long, as if crickets could be heard anytime the Marlins stepped up to the plate. Eric Wagaman gave the Marlins their first base hit of the game in the fourth inning. Connor Norby was the second hit with a double in the seventh inning. Jesus Sanchez had a hit in the eighth inning. Those were the only hits.

Miami failed to produce any action whenever there was a runner on the basepaths. Six basses on balls were issued to them, but to no avail. They had a baserunner on third base twice during the game, but followed up each occurrence with strikeouts.

The Marlins would end the game punching out 11 times at the plate.

Back at it tomorrow

Tomorrow’s a brand-new day. It’ll be another City Connect Saturday at Loan Depot Park. An undefeated Robbie Ray (7-0, 2.56 ERA, 69 K) takes the hill for the San Francisco Giants while Edward Cabrera (1-1, 4.73 ERA, 43 K) gets the start for the Miami Marlins.
