MIAMI, FL – The Marlins started the game with productive at-bats. They resulted in some important runs that shaped the dynamics of the game. The key hits, plus the solid pitching performances on the mound, were able to keep the Padres in check until the last inning. San Diego gave Ronny Henriquez a run for his money at the end. Ultimately, the save from Henriquez helped the Marlins beat the Padres, 4-3.
Fish Come Out Swinging
The Marlins came out swinging in the first inning. Otto Lopez and Agustin Ramirez hit back-to-back. On Ramirez’s single, Lopez was able to score from 1st base thanks to a throwing error from Manny Machado.

Kyle Stowers then came up and hit a double to score Ramirez, bringing his average right under the .300 mark.

After three innings, the Marlins had already come up with six hits, but they didn’t stop there. In the sixth inning, Ramirez hit his 22nd double of the season, and then Kyle Stowers was intentionally walked, which has become a new norm. Heriberto Hernandez stepped up to the plate, and after carefully analyzing the pitches being thrown, he perfectly hit the ball into center field. It was the only sinker that was in the right part of the zone, and he was able to connect on it.

The Marlins had a chance to do more. Eric Wagaman got hit by a pitch to load up the bases for Javier Sanoja. However, the best he could muster up was a flyout. Sanoja made up amends, however. He recorded his third triple of the season in the bottom of the 8th inning.

Play of the Game
Being just a 2-1 game at the time, the Marlins needed to maintain their lead at all costs. In the top of the 6th inning, the Padres were threatening to tie the game. With runners at the corners, the athleticism of Edward Cabrera kicked in.
Xander Bogaerts hit a chopper, which Cabrera had to run after. He made the underhanded throw to Agustin Ramirez at the plate and was able to lay down the tag on Luis Arraez. Had Cabrera arrived at the ball a second later, the Padres would’ve tied this game up.

Cabrera bounced back from his previous start, recording six punchouts and allowing just one run on 5.2 innings of play.
Henriquez Saves the Day
On offense, the Padres were virtually asleep coming into the final inning. Limited to just five hits, they weren’t able to efficiently come up with big moments. That all changed when they saw Ronny Henriquez on the mound, looking for the save. Gavin Sheets got walked on a fastball heavy at-bat in which the pitches were well off the plate. Then came Bogaerts, and he hit a grounder into left field, resulting in a double.
With the Padres seeming to prey on his weakness, Henriquez received a mound visit from pitching coach Daniel Moskos. It seemed not to do much with Jackson Merrill immediately clearing the bases with a sharply hit double to right field. Instantly, the Marlins went from holding a comfortable three-run lead to now being at risk of blowing the save opportunity.
Still, Ronny Henriquez didn’t let the previous moments fret his opportunity to do his job and get the save. Jake Cronenworth flew out to shortstop for the first out. He got Jose Iglesias to chase three pitches that weren’t even close to being strikes for the second out. With a man on second and two away, San Diego elected to replace the right-handed hitter, Martin Maldonado, with left-hander Trenton Brooks. Brooks chased a pitch and ended up popping up to short for the third and final out.
