Earlier today, it was first reported by Adam Schefter that Miami Dolphins tight end and FIU Alum Jonnu Smith has been traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Smith is part of a much larger trade that also sees the Dolphins sending cornerback Jalen Ramsey and a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Steelers in exchange for safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick.

Not having Smith will already make Miami’s offense look completely different compared to 2024. He was arguably their most efficient receiver, reeling in 88 receptions off of 111 targets, 884 receiving yards, and eight touchdowns, including an overtime winner against the New York Jets. Only Tyreek Hill received more targets and receiving yards.
An FIU Product
This will be Smith’s fifth NFL team in his ninth year. Before he was drafted by Tennessee, he played for the FIU Panthers from 2013 to 2016. He was stellar, racking up 2,001 yards and 18 touchdowns. He still holds the most career receiving yards for a tight end in program history.
Now, Miami’s starting tight end will likely be either Julian Hill or Tanner Conner. Regardless, it looks to be an immediate downgrade in the position.
From an FIU and fan perspective, having Smith play in South Florida allowed him to attend FIU Athletics events in person. With the move to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that will likely not happen anymore.

Fitzpatrick began his NFL career with the Dolphins when he was drafted by them in 2018. In his first two seasons there, he recorded 92 total tackles and two interceptions. He was initially traded to Pittsburgh for a 2020 first-round pick, which they used on Austin Jackson. With the Steelers, Fitzpatrick became a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time First Team All-Pro.
Ramsey was acquired by Miami in 2023 from the Los Angeles Rams. He earned a Pro Bowl spot in his first season with the Dolphins. Cryptic tweets aside, it felt more likely that he would be traded away from Miami than tight end Jonnu Smith.
For what it’s worth, the Dolphins are set to visit Acrisure Stadium and take on the Steelers on Monday, December 15th at 8:15pm.
