Eketebis’ Player Legacy
Eketebi’s playing career at FIU spanned from 1983 to 1986, during which he became one of the most prolific forwards in program history. A native of the Democratic Republic of Congo, he quickly established himself as a dominant force on the field. He totaled an impressive 50 career goals and 124 career points, graduating as the school record holder in both categories.
His ability to score was complemented by his ability to perform when the lights shined brightest, netting six postseason goals. Leading FIU to back-to-back appearances in the NCAA DII National Championship finals in 1984 and 1985. In the 1984 season, the Panthers clinched the NCAA Division II National Championship under legendary head coach Karl Kremser. Eketebi’s scoring ability during the postseason run helped etch his name forever in FIU soccer history.
His list of accolades is a testimony to his impressive talent. Eketebi earned All-American honors three consecutive times from 1984 to 1986. He was also a three-time All-South selection and earned All-State honors in each of his four collegiate seasons. Eketebi remains FIU’s all-time leader for hat-trick games with four, highlighting his ability to score at will.
Coaching a Powerhouse
Beyond his playing career, Eketebi’s dedication to FIU soccer continued through his coaching career. He served as an assistant coach for 18 years, playing an important role in the program’s development and success. During Eketebis’ tenure, the Panthers made five NCAA Tournament appearances. The FIU program quickly became a powerhouse for producing professional talent. Having 16 players advancing to the MLS (Major League Soccer), and four of whom earned nods to play with the U.S. Men’s National Team.
In 2007, Eketebi earned the head coaching role and was with the team until 2011. During his time at the helm, he focused on creating a competitive and accomplished team, leaving a lasting influence on the program and its players.
The Final Step of the Road
Reflecting on his Hall of Fame induction, Eketebi expressed humbleness and gratitude:
“I am honored, grateful, and blessed to be the first soccer player inducted in the FIU Hall of Fame. I would not have made it without my teammates, who became lifelong friends. The program was very successful before I got there, and there are plenty of candidates who should have received this honor before me.”
Munga Eketebi’s induction into the FIU Hall of Fame is a tribute to his extraordinary contributions as both a player and a coach. His legacy continues to inspire Panthers players and fans, representing the dedication, skill, and passion that define FIU soccer.
