Miami, Florida – The 64-team field is set as the Miami Hurricanes drew the Gainesville Regional to begin the Road to Omaha for the College World Series. UM earned the second seed and will begin its quest Friday night against the No. 3 seed Troy. The top seed and regional hosts, the Florida Gators, kick off the competition versus the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions, the Rider Broncs. Miami completed the 2026 regular season 36-17 (16-14, ACC), missing the double-bye for the conference championship after dropping two of three to Florida State. The Canes blew a 6-1 lead late to start the series, getting walked off in the 11th inning. FSU proceeded to mercy-rule their rivals 11-1 before the Hurricanes salvaged the series with a 7-5 win.

UM bounced back in the conference tournament, overwhelming Stanford 11-2, followed by an 8-2 win over Boston College. Their ACC Championship run ended in the semifinals, as they lost 9-3 to top-seeded Georgia Tech. Unranked for most of the season, the Hurricanes’ hopes of hosting a regional were long gone towards the end of the campaign. The Cardiac Canes were ranked 22nd in the preseason rankings by D1 Baseball. However, the program completely fell out of the rankings by week four and never returned. Despite the disappointment, particularly the weaknesses in the bullpen, the Miami Hurricanes hope to replicate last year’s magic. Although they will have to do it without Daniel Cuvet, who remains out.
Past failures and success
Miami won the 2025 Hattiesburg Regional as the third seed, defeating the hosts, Southern Miss, 5-4 in the final. Additionally, the Hurricanes edged out Alabama 5-3 and then cruised to the final, blowing out Columbia 14-1. The Golden Eagles pushed the Hurricanes 17-6, forcing a decisive finale, but the Canes emerged victorious. They fell short against Louisville 3-2 in the final game of the best-of-three super regional. The last time the Hurricanes were in Gainesville for a regional was in 2021. UM started with a 1-0 win over South Alabama as the Gators stumbled right out of the gates. UF suffered a 5-3 upset to South Florida and was then eliminated via a humiliating 19-1 loss to the Jaguars. Excitement turned to disbelief when Miami lost to USF and became the next team out courtesy of a vengeful South Alabama. The fourth-seeded Bulls advanced out of Gainesville, shocking many.

Aside from the classic rivalry between the Hurricanes and Gators, there’s very little history between the participants. Florida and Rider have only faced each other once (UF won 6-1 in 1992). Miami and Troy, meanwhile, have squared off in other sports such as basketball. Rider’s sole experience versus UM was at the 1994 Coral Gables regional. The Broncs had two regular-season games against Troy in 1992. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the opponents standing in Miami’s way.

Folks might be looking at Florida, but don’t underestimate Troy. Ranked 35th by D1 baseball, the Trojans are more than capable of throwing a wrench into Miami’s plans. They’ve recorded wins (and losses, too) against SEC teams like Georgia and Bama. Troy has also defeated the No. 9 national seed Southern Miss, which is hosting back-to-back regionals for the first time in the program’s history. The Trojans can score, and they’ve hit nearly as many home runs (78) as Miami (79). Jimmy Janicki is the guy the Hurricanes need to watch out for. Janicki is hitting .350, leading the team with both 17 home runs and 73 RBIs. Aaron Piasecki (.338 AVG, 9 HRs) and Steven Meier (.309 AVG, 9 HRs) are two other players who can prove troublesome. Troy’s pitching is poor. Miami can and will exploit this.

If Miami beats the Trojans, they are highly likely to play the Gators in what will be the marquee matchup of the Gainesville regional. And you can bet it’ll be a fiesty rematch. UF came to the Light early in the season and swept the Canes, winning both games of the weather-shortened series. Now the Hurricanes are at their house. They have solid pitching, whether it’s the starters or the bullpen. SEC Pitcher of the Year Aidan King (8-2, 2.68 ERA) is being held for possibly Saturday, leaving the assignment of kicking off the regional to Russell Sandefer (3-2, 4.38 ERA). At the plate, the Gators are very dangerous, brimming with power hitting. Former Hurricane Blake Cyr brandishes a .338 batting average and 13 HRs. The familiar foe is joined by slugger Brendan Lawson (.308, 16 HRs) and Ethan Surowiec (.328, 11 HRs), who are part of a team that hits up and down the lineup.
Rider (33-18 record, 22-8 MAAC)

Barring any surprises, the Hurricanes may never face Rider. Although they are both regular-season and conference tournament champions, the Broncs never faced a team like the Gators. Friday ace PJ Craig (9-3, 3.39 ERA) will get the ball against Florida. Kyle Batt (4-5, 4.67 ERA) and Clayton Poliey (3-1, 5.61 ERA) can also make appearances depending on how far Rider advances. At the plate, Charley Magoulick (.345, 9 HRs), Nick Shuhet (.343, 5 HRs), and Kyle Neri (.352, 7 HRs) are some of their productive bats. Their Relief Corps has several decent arms they can call upon in high-leverage situations, but the rest of the field can likely overpower them.
Prediction
It will be the U’s 51st appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Hurricanes should beat Troy, but they don’t have the talent to surpass a complete team like the Gators. I foresee Miami bouncing back in a rematch with the Trojans or even Rider, but they will hit the wall again with UF. It’s their regional to lose, and they’ll clinch it by Sunday night. UM’s arms will need to collectively bring their A-game, and they lack the depth to do so. Hopefully I’m wrong, it’s baseball after all. Anything can happen.
