Miami, Florida – The Miami Hurricanes were unable to bounce back from last night’s big loss, imploding 9-6 against the Troy Trojans. UM’s march to Omaha ends early after crashing out 1-2 at the Gainesville Regional, finishing the season 39-20 (16-14, ACC). The Canes fell behind early when Troy’s Steven Meier hit an RBI single in the first, and Josh Pyne homered in the third. Lazaro Collera did not last long, getting pulled after three innings, working a high pitch count, allowing two runs on six hits. AJ Ciscar returned to the mound but fared little better, and neither did Jack Dorn.

Miami rallied with four runs in the fourth. Alex Sosa launched a two-run homer towards center, reinforced by a two-run single from Gabriel Milano. Max Galvin joined in with a solo shot to right field during the fifth, while Sosa came back for more with an RBI double. The midway point of the contest ended up being the Hurricanes’ high-water mark. Troy got one back on a fielder’s choice, followed by three more in the sixth. Jabe Boroff led off with a home run to left field off Ciscar before the Trojans continued with three consecutive hits to load the bases. Dorn came in and allowed a run on a wild pitch. Jimmy Janicki hit one deep enough for the sac fly, plating Aaron Piasecki as the tying run. UM went quiet the rest of the way at the plate.

Troy, meanwhile, took Dorn deep with back-to-back long balls in the seventh, complemented by an RBI single in the eighth to eliminate the Hurricanes. The Trojans avenged Friday night’s loss and stayed alive, but will need to beat the Gators twice in a row if they wish to clinch Gainesville.

Final Thoughts

And so it ends. Not a triumphant or at least a respectable bang, but with a resigned whimper. A dejected sigh of another disappointment. My prediction was a 40-15 regular season, and they went 36-17. One UF game was rained out, and they cancelled the finale with Florida International. Although this year is an improvement from last (35-27), fans are wondering if the program is in good hands. Coach J.D. Arteaga has two years left in his five-year contract, and it appears he will remain at the helm. Through three seasons, Arteaga has two NCAA Tournament appearances and one Super Regional appearance. I thought they’d go 2-2 for the regional, so they bowed out early, getting outscored 36-26.

Something has to change at Coral Gables. The talent on offense was wasted through an atrocious defense that committed an eye-popping 90 errors and an untested bullpen that proved ill-equipped to the task. A big thank you to all who followed this year’s coverage. Hopefully, next year the team performs to the standard the fanbase has come to expect. Stay frosty, my friends.
