Marlins Continue June Stretch as Hottest Team in Baseball

Marlins Hottest Team Baseball

Miami Marlins

MIAMI, FL – Otto Lopez became the first player in the MLB to reach 100 hits this season, and Max Meyer improved his record to 8-0. With a 13-4 record this month, the Miami Marlins continue their June stretch as the hottest team in baseball with a 6-3 win over the San Francisco Giants.

Max Meyer Remains Unbeaten

Meyer is the only qualified starter in the majors without a loss. The right-hander went five innings, allowing seven hits, two runs, and two walks, on seven strikeouts. He passed Dontrelle Willis, who went 7-0 in 2005, for the best start to a season for a Marlins pitcher in franchise history.

The right-hander had nine swing-and-misses, relying heavily on his fastball, sweeper, and slider. San Francisco swung 46 times with him on the mound, and 20 pitches were called strikes.

4th Inning Game Changer

Miami struck first in the first inning when Owen Caissie walked with the bases loaded. In the second, they made it 2-1 after Xavier Edwards reached first on a fielding error from Trevor McDonald.

In a tied 2-2 game, the Marlins capitalized with a game-changing inning in the fourth. It started with Esteury Perez getting hit by a pitch, stealing second, and then reaching third on an error.

Jakob Marsee drove in Perez with an RBI single. He finished with a pair of hits. Then, Otto Lopez got his only hit of the ballgame, which made him the first player to reach 100 hits this season. He joins Luis Arraez (2023) and Dee Gordon (2015) as the only players in club history to become the first in the majors with 100 hits.

After Kyle Stowers walked, the bases were loaded with no outs. Xavier Edwards hit into a double play but still scored Marsee. Then, Heriberto Hernandez hit a two-run homer to cap off the scoring in the inning, making it 6-2.

Tyler Zuber got two punchouts in 1.1 innings. Cade Gibson made his second appearance of the series, getting 1.1 innings of work. Anthony Bender recorded the final two outs in the eighth.

Pete Fairbanks got the save, his second in consecutive games, to seal the game. The Marlins are winners of seven straight at home, their longest stretch since June 2-19, 2023. Miami is now 39-38 with a record over .500 since April 11 (8-7).
