Inter Miami Tidbits: Monterrey Downs Depleted Inter Miami; Hoyos’ Decisions Hinder The Herons

Nu Stadium- Rayados de Monterrey defeated Inter Miami CF 2-1 on Saturday night in their Leagues Cup 2026 matchup in Miami. Monterrey, led by goals from Hugo Cuypers and Diego Rossi, came from behind to earn three crucial points against the Herons. Rodrigo De Paul scored Miami’s lone goal of the match.

De Paul put Inter Miami CF ahead in the 32nd minute with a low rocket into the Rayados’ net. He celebrated by honoring Lionel Messi, displaying his No. 10 jersey.

Monterrey tied the match at 1-1 early in the second half when Hugo Cuypers fired a short-range blast off a rebound from Rocco Ríos Novo.

Monterrey took advantage of some lax defending by Miami to score the winning goal in stoppage time. Diego Rossi slipped in behind a flat-footed David Ruiz and pushed the game-winner into the back of the Herons’ net.

The loss leaves Miami in a compromised position to advance to the next round, in which only the top four MLS teams advance.

Hoyos Put Miami In A Hole

Head coach Guillermo Hoyos was facing a huge dilemma before the Monterrey game. The team’s forwards were either injured or suspended for the crucial Leagues Cup match against Rayados. Luis Suárez is serving a six-game suspension; Mateo Silvetti, Tadeo Allende, and Germán Berterame are all dealing with injuries; and Lionel Messi is away from the team grieving the death of his father.

Hoyos had little choice but to insert young Herons Daniel Pinter and Lovend Delinois into the lineup against Rayados. The two played well, especially considering their lack of professional experience and the magnitude of Saturday’s match. Despite all the obstacles, Inter Miami was competing toe-to-toe with Liga MX powerhouse Monterrey—until Hoyos began making substitutions that weakened the squad.

It seems like Guillermo has it written in stone that, around the 65th minute of every match, Yannick Bright must come off for David Ayala. Bright was substituted for Ayala in the 68th minute of Saturday’s match, and the move did not seem warranted given the flow of the game. Bright is a tough defender who covers a lot of ground for the Herons. Monterrey was becoming more and more comfortable in the match, while De Paul and Casemiro are not the fastest defenders. Bringing on Ayala took some bite out of the Herons’ defense. Bright did not appear fatigued and looked like he could have stayed on the field.

The substitution of David Ruiz for Facundo Mura was another move that greatly weakened the Herons’ defense in a highly contested match. Ruiz was completely outclassed on the right side and was caught flat-footed on Rossi’s game-winning tap-in off a cross into the box.

Granted, Hoyos did not have many options to choose from, but Ruiz was not the best option at right back. Ian Fray could have been shifted to right back, with Fricio Caicedo brought in at center back to close out the match. I understand that it is easy to analyze these decisions after the fact, but these moves seemed evident at the time while watching the game. At times, coaches have these substitutions preplanned and stick to the script without considering other options.
