Marlins Dozen Blowout Braves

Miami Marlins

MIAMI, FL – After a slow start, the Miami Marlins awakened on offense during the game, and their success at the plate began with a five-run inning in the fourth. Max Meyer showed exactly why he has been Miami’s most consistent starter on the mound, going on to deliver another quality start. The Marlins would go on to score a dozen in a 12-0 blowout victory against the Atlanta Braves.

Joe Mack RBIs & Five-Run Rally

In the second, Joe Mack hit an RBI groundout to give the Marlins their first run of the game. Then, the bases loaded up in the fourth, with Kyle Stowers hitting a single, Jakob Marsee getting hit by a pitch, and Connor Norby getting walked. Mack responded with a two-run single, adding his total RBI column to three for the night. Marsee led the team with three runs in the game.

Xavier Edwards made it a four-run game after driving in Connor Norby on a base hit. Moments later, Liam Hicks extended the lead to six with a two-run double, capping off the five-run inning. He went 2/4 at the plate and continues to be a force in the big leagues by leading with 42 RBI.

Javier Sanoja Grand Slam & Six-Run Rally

For the second time in the game, Mack would have the bases loaded thanks to three consecutive walks to Stowers, Marsee, and Norby. He delivered with a walk, giving him a total of four RBI on the day. Mack scored two runs in the ballgame.

Up 7-0, Javier Sanoja delivered big with his first career grand slam and first long ball of the season. The ball had an exit speed of 105.4 miles per hour at a launch angle of 21 degrees, traveling a total of 375 feet. This was his second straight game with four total bases after doing the same in this past Saturday’s 10-5 victory against the Rays in St. Petersburg.

Afterwards, Xavier Edwards finished off the six-run inning, going back-to-back for the Marlins with a solo home run, his fifth of the season. He hit a sinker at 101.2 MPH at a launch angle of 26 feet for a total distance of 397 feet. Edwards finished the game going 2/4 with two runs scored and two runs driven in. His .322 average is seventh in the majors.

Max Meyer Masterclass

Meyer displayed more of his consistency tonight, throwing a 97-pitch six-inning gem of shutout baseball. He allowed just three hits and two walks on six strikeouts. He’s certainly making his case for an All-Star nod with a 4-0 record, 2.85 ERA, 60 strikeouts, 1.12 WHIP, and .203 opponents’ batting average in 53.2 innings.

Max Meyer had a good mix of pitches, with the fastball (31%), slider (25%), and sweeper (22%) being used the most. He struck out four with the sweeper and one with the fastball and slider. His changeup (13%) and sinker (9%) were used effectively as well against righties and lefties.

Meyer got a total of 13 swing and misses, and Atlanta whiffed at 43% of Meyer’s sliders. Their three hits against him were all on the sweeper. They swung at 72% of all his pitches in the strike zone, and at least half the time for each of his five pitches.

A notable stat for Meyer tonight was that he dominated counts against the majority of his opponents. He threw first-pitch strikes 65% of the time. His four-seamer averaged 95.3 MPH while his maximum velocity clocked in at 97.0.

Bullpen Throws Scoreless Innings

John King threw a nine-pitch seventh inning, striking out one. His ERA stands at 2.18. Calvin Faucher delivered in the eighth with two strikeouts, lowering his earned run average to 2.89. Lake Bachar was flawless in the ninth and finished the game with a 2.63 ERA.
