Miami Hurricanes collapse in extras on Senior Night

Miami, Florida – The Louisville Cardinals outlasted the Miami Hurricanes, putting up 9 runs in the 11th inning to win 16-9 on Senior Night. UM initially took the lead in the contest before engaging in a back-and-forth battle that lasted over 4 hours, exhausting most of the bullpen. The relief corps’ season-long weaknesses were once again exploited when the Cards went ahead in the eighth and then buried the Canes in extra innings. Miami rallied in the ninth after three lead changes, thanks to freshman Alonzo Alvarez’s RBI single, scoring pinch-runner Tate DeRias to tie it 7-7.

UM came within inches of walking it off in the tenth when Gabriel Milano’s hit was caught at the wall near the scoreboard by left-center. The Hurricanes ultimately blinked first. Zion Rose hit a two-run double in the eleventh off Jake Dorn, finding the gap in right-center, followed by a sac fly run from Griffin Crain, culminating in a morale-crushing two-run home run from Tague Davis, his second of the night. Davis set a single-season ACC record with his 32nd homer of the season. The Cards tacked on four more, capping off the barrage. Lazaro Collera was the Canes’ starter, throwing six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits.

Miami struck first at the bottom of the second. Alex Sosa led off with a walk, followed by a one-out double from Alvarez. Vance Sheahan cashed in with a two-run single for the early advantage. UM almost scratched another run in the subsequent frame. With two outs, Sosa got caught stealing second, acting as a decoy while Max Galvin attempted to sneak home. Although the home plate ump initially gestured he was safe, Sosa was tagged before Galvin crossed the plate.

Louisville would leapfrog the Canes, smashing back-to-back homers during the fourth. Davis, who had recorded an eye-catching 30 home runs heading into tonight’s game, alongside Jimmy Nugent, took Collera deep. Down 5-2, the Cardiac Canes countered with four runs of their own. Derek Williams lined an RBI double reinforced by a towering three-run shot from Sosa, retaking the lead 6-5. However, the Cardinals regained the momentum via Bayram Hot’s two-run single, setting the stage for the eventual meltdown.

Impressions

What a brutal loss. The Hurricanes had multiple opportunities, and they came pretty close to clinching the series. I believe the Canes are relatively safe at the moment for the regionals, but make no mistake, the last home game of the year is a pivotal rubber match. Furthermore, AJ Ciscar needs to go deep for the pen. UM will be without Daniel Cuvet and possibly Brylan West for the finale. West had an early exit after landing awkwardly on his right leg, returning to first in the pickoff. Coach J.D. Arteaga mentioned he will be evaluated Saturday morning.

Honoring the Seniors

Man, time flies. Some have been with the program since the start of their college careers, while others have found a home at Coral Gables later on. Whether they go on to the pros or pursue careers outside of baseball or something in between, these college athletes will forever be Hurricanes. I congratulate all of them and wish the players the very best as they start an exciting new chapter:

Derek Williams, Jake Ogden, Max Galvin, Lyndon Glidewell, Rob Evans, Packy Bradley-Cooney, Jackson Hugus, Brylan West, Ryan Bilka, Jake Dorn, and Liam Sweeney (Student Manager).

Gus Bus Award

Alex Sosa went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.

You’re Killing Me Smalls

Lastly, Jake Dorn’s outing was ugly. He gave up four runs, including Davis’ deep ball.
