JUPITER, FL – Coming off as the Florida State League First-Half champions with a 36-27 record, the Jupiter Hammerheads were on a two-game losing streak to the Palm Beach Cardinals. With the team totaling 13 hits, Carter Johnson and Echedry Vargas had multi-hit games to lead Jupiter to a 9-8 victory.

Johnson and Vargas Each Have Multi-Hit Night

Noble Meyer struggled in his second start of the season tonight. The 2023 10th overall pick threw 25 balls out of a total of 48 pitches. He finished with a final line of two innings, two hits, two runs, four walks, and three strikeouts. Meyer’s ERA did drop from 18.00 to 9.00.

Carter Johnson led the game off by swinging at the first pitch for a double, his 15th of the season. Miami Marlins #19 prospect, Luis Arana, drove in Johnson after he singled on a grounder to right. Arana is coming off a recent promotion from the Florida Complex League Marlins. He’s currently slashing .327/.459/.469 with 16 hits, four doubles, a home run, and 11 RBI in 49 at-bats.

Echedry Vargas, who’s been swinging a hot bat throughout June, added to his stat sheet in the first inning with a two-run homer. It was his fourth home run of the season and his first hit of three in the game. After the first, it was 3-1 Hammerheads.

After Meyer gave up a bases loaded walk in the third inning, Eiver Mosquera entered the game for the Hammerheads. The Cardinals scored some runs off him and briefly took the lead at one point, but the Hammerheads were able to provide him with run support.

Johnson tied the game at four apiece in the fifth with an RBI single to left. Then, Vargas made it a 6-4 contest with his 10th double of the season. He finished the game going a season-best 4/5 with three RBI.

Palm Beach got one back in the sixth, but Jupiter followed up with two more runs in the bottom half of the frame. Johnson’s third hit and second RBI of the game made it 7-5. He had a 3/5 game.

Hammerheads Close out the Win

Later on, with the bases loaded, Edgardo De Leon won a check swing challenge, earning a walk to put Jupiter up 8-5. Mosquera made his third appearance on the mound for the Hammerheads. Coming off a recent promotion from the FCL Marlins, he tossed four innings, allowing five hits, three runs, two walks, and six strikeouts.

Jose Monserrate made it 9-6 at the time in the seventh inning with a line drive single to center. He went 2/3, a contrast from his recent struggles at the plate.

Ian Medina made a bullpen appearance in the seventh. He tossed 1.2 innings, surrendering three hits, three runs, and two walks. At times, strikes were hard for him to come by, with 25 of them on 46 pitches. Braulio Salas got the save after tossing the final 1.1 innings.

The Hammerheads finished the game with 13 hits, going 7/17 with runners in scoring position.
