-Inter Miami faces the New England Revolution on the road Sunday evening in an immensely important match. A win would catapult Miami into second place in the Eastern Conference Standings, while a loss could jeopardize the Herons’ participation in the 2027 CONCACAF Champions Cup, not to mention cause them to drop further in the conference standings behind New England.
The two squads enter the match on contrasting runs over their last five MLS matches. Inter Miami has won three games but stumbled in its last two, suffering a loss and a last-minute equalizer. New England, meanwhile, has won its last four matches after an earlier defeat and enters the contest riding a wave of momentum.
Miami Conundrum
The Herons are still searching for their identity. Kily González has coached only seven MLS matches so far, but he has done a solid job of organizing Miami’s defense since his arrival. Before his appointment, Inter Miami was bleeding goals and proving vulnerable to teams that excel at launching quick counterattacks.
It appeared that Miami had finally resolved its defensive woes after recording three consecutive wins while conceding just one goal. Inter Miami appeared to find themselves defensively during the three-game stretch where they defeated DC United 4-0, NYCFC 2-0, and Atlanta United 3-1. Spirits were high, and fans had hope that Gonzalez had finally solved the team’s issues.
However, the Herons’ performances in their last two matches have left much to be desired, raising questions about whether the team has truly turned the corner defensively. The matches against the New York Red Bulls and FC Cincinnati once again exposed Inter Miami’s defensive vulnerabilities when facing a high press or quick counterattacks from speedy opponents.
New York Red Bulls’ speed & pressure on the ball has been a problem for #InterMiamiCF .. The young bulls 🐂 are dictating the tempo & making Miami play at an uncomfortable pace..#MLS #Lemoncitylive pic.twitter.com/ic9NWRKMTc

Cincinnati employed the same formula against Inter Miami, settling for a draw only after youngster Riquelme Fillipi scored a last-minute equalizer. Both FC Cincinnati and the New York Red Bulls exposed Miami’s vulnerability to high pressure and quick counterattacks. Now, it’s Kily’s turn to make the necessary adjustments, whether through lineup changes or tactical tweaks. The upcoming match against New England will provide the perfect opportunity to see how well González can adapt to adversity.
