Marlins Capitalize on Errors from Red Sox to Take Series Finale

MIAMI, FL – After two disappointing games, the Miami Marlins limited the Boston Red Sox from succeeding at the plate. Despite contributing to the hit column, the Marlins capitalized on Red Sox errors to take the series finale, 4-0.

Marlins Score Most of Their Runs on Errors

The Marlins got to work in the first inning. Kyle Stowers led off with a hit and then advanced to third after Griffin Conine grounded out and Nick Sogard made a throwing error. Then, Heriberto Hernandez hit an RBI to put Miami ahead 1-0.

Their second run came via Otto Lopez. He singled in the bottom half of the second. Then, he stole second base and scored following a throwing error from Connor Wong behind the dish.

Boston’s hitters couldn’t figure out Ryan Gusto, who pitched 5.2 innings, allowing four hits, no runs, and three walks on a pair of strikeouts.

Gusto relied on his fastball often, using it 25% of the time. He used his other six pitches at about an even rate. His opponents got 18 batted balls in play, but Gusto’s defense backed him up with outs.

Ryan Gusto threw a lot of darts on the mound, averaging 76% first pitch strikes. He averaged 87.9 miles per hour on his pitches, but his fastball was above his yearly average of 95.3.

Victor Vodnik earned his sixth hold, tossing 1.1 hitless innings and recording a punchout. His fastball averaged 97.6, and his highest velocity tonight was 98.5.

Miami scored its last two runs in the eighth inning. Otto Lopez followed a similar pattern to his at-bat at the beginning of the game. He got on base with a hit and stole second. Then, he advanced to third on an error from Connor Wong.

Later, he scored once Owen Caissie reached first on a fielding error from Nick Sogard. Javier Sanoja made it 4-0 after driving in Esteury Ruiz on a base hit.

Janson Junk got the hold in the eighth, and Dax Fulton shut the door in the final frame. Despite scoring runs, the Marlins still generally struggled with runners in scoring position, going 2/14 while stranding 10 on the basepaths.

On the positives, Sanoja had three hits and stole three bases. Hernandez and Lopez both had multi-hit games. The Marlins finished the game with a new season-high of six stolen bases. They currently rank second in baseball with 140 stolen bases as a team.
