Miami, Florida – Carson Beck and Akheem Mesidor pulled off clutch plays, ensuring UM doubled up on the Virginia Tech Hokies 34-17 to win three in a row. Down 27-17 with a little over three minutes left in the game, Virginia Tech had momentum on its side after backup QB William Watson III scored on a three-yard rush, followed by the Hokies recovering the onside kick. Watson overcame a 10-yard sack on the opening play with a short pass that turned into a 38-yard gain to Isaiah Spencer. Gifted by an offensive pass interference that pushed the ball back to Miami’s 48-yard line, Mesidor seized on the opportunity.

The edge rusher broke through and stripped the ball away, allowing Zechariah Poyser to come up with the fumble recovery. With 2:06 remaining, Beck made sure the big turnover wasn’t wasted. Marching his team into the red zone, the Hurricanes had a decision to make. Coach Mario Cristobal went for it on fourth and two, resulting in Beck hitting Malachi Toney for the 20-yard touchdown. Carson Beck finished the day completing 27 of 32 passes for 320 yards and four TDs that included a streak of 24 consecutive completions. The defense, meanwhile, recorded nine tackles for loss, including five sacks. Watson replaced starting QB Kyron Drones midway through the fourth quarter due to injury. The Hokies were 3-for-12 on third down while UM dominated time of possession.

Despite a paltry 83 combined rushing yards, the Hurricanes saw aerial touchdowns from Mark Fletcher Jr. and Girard Pringle Jr. Toney was by far the top wide receiver, tallying 12 catches for 146 yards and a TD (15 targets). UM scored on their first five possessions, initiated by a 20-yard score by Elija Lofton. Miami punted twice all afternoon. The Cardiac Canes are now 9-2, including a 5-2 conference record. They travel to Pittsburgh for the season finale.

Miami’s nightmare scenario was close to reality. The Canes needed a big stop, and Mesidor delivered. Cristobal made an excellent call, rewarded with Beck’s fourth TD of the day. Although the Hurricanes never landed the needed knockout blow, their momentum-shifting takeaway and subsequent touchdown are worth consideration. All that’s left is to take care of Pitt after Thanksgiving. Win out and let the chips fall where they may.
