Miami, Florida – The Miami Hurricanes ended their home schedule on a positive note, nearly shutting out NC State 41-7 to improve to 8-2 overall (4-2, ACC). Heading into week 12, NC State’s formidable offense was ranked 27th in the country, led by Miami native CJ Bailey and ACC star running back Hollywood Smothers. Bailey got picked off twice in a row, and Smothers was smothered, held to -2 yards while constraining the Wolfpack to 149 yards of total offense, including 29 rushing yards. Miami dominated time of possession, going five-for-five in the red zone, leading wire-to-wire.
Not only does Jakobe Thomas get the ball back, he takes it to the house. TD Miami! Cardiac Canes up 10-0 late in the first quarter.#GoCanes || #ItsAllAboutTheU pic.twitter.com/7tUk3R1aDP

After shutting down the Wolfpack’s opening drive, the Hurricanes scored first. Miami marched down the field, aided by a 35-yard reception to Keelan Marion. Despite the explosive play, the possession sputtered, forcing the Cardiac Canes to settle for a 31-yard field goal. UM’s second drive went awry when CharMar Brown fumbled the ball. Devon Marshall slammed into him when he made the catch, stripping the ball away. The defense sprang into action as Jakobe Thomas came up with the pick-six, widening Miami’s lead 10-0. Hungry for an encore, Thomas intercepted Bailey again the very next series.
That's Elija Lofton's first TD of the year. 8 plays covering 85 yards capped off by a 29-yard connection from Beck. His last receiving touchdown was on September 14, 2024, versus Ball State.#GoCanespic.twitter.com/9j0EC0CyWW

The Canes continued to attack during the second quarter. Malachi Toney went deep to Jojo Trader for 43 yards. Buoyed by the trick play, Brown ran it in for the one-yard score, making it 17-0. The U shoved NC State further when Beck hit Toney late in the half for the 14-yard TD, capping off a nine-play drive, putting UM firmly in the driver’s seat. Momentum remained in the Hurricanes’ favor, landing the needed knockout blow coming out of halftime. Elija Lofton hauled in Beck’s pass on first and 10, completing the 29-yard strike, recording his first TD of the year. Up 31-0 late in the period, Carter Davis nailed his second field goal of the night, a 38-yarder.
Bailey ended the shutout late in the game via a 10-yard rushing touchdown just before the two-minute warning, with the outcome already decided. Girard Pringle Jr. led the way on the ground, totaling 17 carries for 116 yards. Brown came up next with eight carries for 45 yards and a touchdown. Marion caught all seven passes for 96 yards. Toney, meanwhile, made five receptions for 54 yards and two TDs. Beck would complete 21 of 27 passes for 291 yards and three touchdowns before backup Emory Williams stepped in.

Impressions
The committee wanted style points, and the Miami Hurricanes delivered in spades. UM’s offense put up points early, and the defense went ham on the Wolfpack, exemplifying complementary football. They pressured the QB, turning the offense into a one-trick pony that went 3-for-12 on third down. Fans haven’t seen such a complete victory since arguably September. Why do our troubles always start when the ACC schedule begins?

Despite an efficient beginning, the team finished with eight penalties, although they were mitigated with the Hurricanes outclassing NC State across the stat line. Now the focus shifts to getting guys back from injury and preparing for the road game at Virginia Tech.
