Miami, Florida – Dorian Gonzalez tamed the Columbia Lions, smashing two homers and adding a career-high eight RBIs while Griffin Hugus tossed a complete game. After going hitless Friday night against Alabama, Miami’s captain went 3-for-4, scoring thrice. Hugus, meanwhile, dazzled on the mound, striking out nine on the 123 pitch performance, holding the Ivy League Champions to a mere run, scattering eight hits. The Hurricanes not only halted the Lions’ 10-game winning streak but also clinched their 40th Regional final in program history. They will face the winner of the game between Southern Miss and Columbia Sunday night.
Dorian dropping the hammer with his ninth HR of the year. He went hitless in last night's contest but somehow I knew he'd be okay, and he's showing it. #GoCanespic.twitter.com/h5fIcbHuhP

The Hurricanes got off to another fast start with four runs in the first. Jake Ogden led off with a single, triggering a parade of five straight hits. With runners at first and second, Daniel Cuvet doubled down the third base line, knocking in the first two runs. Dorian Gonzalez Jr. drove in Cuvet via an RBI single. Gonzalez would later score on a wild pitch. The senior was only getting started. Up 5-1 after Max Galvin’s RBI double, Columbia intentionally walked Cuvet only for Gonzalez to follow up with a towering three-run blast to right field, his ninth home run of the year. Dorian recorded number ten, dropping the hammer with a grand slam in the seventh for the commanding 13-1 lead. Miami’s great plays on the field accompanied their success at the plate.

Cuvet made an efficient heads-up play during the second frame when he gloved Skye Selinsky’s grounder, firing it home for the out at the plate, denying Cole Fellows of the run. While Hugus contained the Lions, the Canes executed double plays in the third and sixth. The latter was impactful because it stranded the runner at third. Feeding off the momentum, Galvin homered for the second consecutive night that same inning in the form of a solo blast. He finished the evening 3-for-5, also including a double, three runs, and two RBIs. Cuvet went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs, three runs, and three walks. Michael Torres scored the last run at the bottom of the eighth via an RBI single, going 2-for-3.

Wow. Just wow. The Miami Hurricanes produced a complete game in multiple ways. They were solid at the plate and on the field. Terrific defense supported a quality gem on the mound. The bats were 8-for-15 with two outs (.533), 7-for-16 with runners in scoring position (.438), and 5-for-8 leading off (.625). That’s great work. UM is now one win away from winning its first regional since 2016, which is also the last time they advanced to the College World Series. Hugus gave the bullpen the night off, awarding Miami a fantastic opportunity with pitching depth. Let’s see if the U can advance tomorrow.
