Miami, Florida – The Miami Hurricanes put on a clinic, run-ruling Notre Dame 15-1 through seven innings, ending their four-game losing streak. UM starter AJ Ciscar got plenty of run support in the form of a 14-hit barrage, with most of the damage occurring in the first two innings. While the offense threw haymakers, Ciscar tossed six frames of one-run ball, hamstringing the Fighting Irish with six punchouts.

After the tough 3-2 loss last night that ended with left fielder Jared Zimbardo’s impressive catch at the wall, robbing the Canes of a walk-off win, the bats rained down on the pitching, knocking out Rory Fox and overwhelming the relievers. Team captain and senior Dorian Gonzalez Jr. led the way, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs, including a home run. Daniel Cuvet, meanwhile, also homered, finishing 3-for-3, recording four runs, an extra base hit, and a RBI. Leadoff hitter Jake Ogden went deep in the second inning, ending the night 2-for-4, scoring twice and knocking in two. Another senior, Renzo Gonzalez, notched two hits in four at-bats, including an RBI double.

Davis Johnson broke up the shutout with a solo home run in the sixth. Johnson’s blast was one of three hits. Notre Dame’s defense did not do itself any favors by committing three errors Friday night, costing them four runs. The Hurricanes honored nine players on Senior Night: Reese Lumpkin, Carson Fischer, Alex Giroux, Tanner Smith, Will Smith, Renzo Gonzalez, Gaby Gutierrez, Brian Walters, and Dorian Gonzalez. Smith went 1-for-3, consisting of an RBI double, while Gutierrez went hitless in two at-bats. Likewise, it was 90s night, bringing back the nostalgia of a bygone era. The Cardiac Canes improve to 31-22 overall, complemented by a 15-13 conference record. They play their season finale Saturday afternoon.
Rock you like a Hurricane
The Hurricanes got to work early in the first, putting up a quartet of runs. Ogden got hit by a pitch, followed by Max Galvin drawing a walk. Cuvet got on board hitting a soft single, deflecting the ball off third baseman Nick DeMarco’s glove to load the bases. Miami jumped ahead 2-0 thanks to back-to-back sacrifice flies from Gonzalez and Smith. The inning continued when the second baseman Connor Hincks misplayed Jake Kulikowski’s two-out grounder, allowing Cuvet to score on the fielding error to make it 3-0. Kulikowski eventually came home on Renzo Gonzalez’s RBI double.

UM brought down the hammer in the second. Dorian launched his eighth home run of the year deep to center field, making it 7-0 Hurricanes. It didn’t end there. A bases-loaded throwing error cost the Fighting Irish three runs, followed by a two-run blast by Ogden, also his eighth. Gonzalez came back for more, capping off the explosive nine-run effort with an RBI single, knocking in Cuvet. The Canes would tack on two more, including a fourth-inning bomb from Danny Dingers.

After last night’s heartbreaker, the boys did exactly what they were supposed to do. By scoring early and often, the Hurricanes knocked out the Fighting Irish, digging deep into their bullpen. The dominant bounce-back win ended a damaging four-game losing streak, aiding the postseason cause in pursuit of the eighth seed for the ACC tournament. Winning on Senior Night made the victory all the sweeter. Tomorrow will be a bittersweet experience, as this will be the very last time these nine individuals play at The Light.
Dorian Gonzalez’s departure will be a particularly sad one. The well-known walk-off hero was a great presence on the team, especially these last two seasons. The veteran displayed leadership and poise throughout his four years, helping the Hurricanes achieve success both on the field and at the plate. He will be missed. I wish all these players the best going forward.

Gus Bus Award
Dorian is the captain for a reason.
You’re Killing Me Smalls
Gutierrez going hitless on Senior Night was disappointing. He might be able to redeem himself tomorrow.
