Miami, Florida – The Miami Hurricanes overcame a late-season stumble, making it to the Hattiesburg Regional to kick off their march to Omaha. UM joins hosts Southern Miss, Columbia, and Alabama, opening the tournament versus the Crimson Tide (41-16, 16-14 SEC) this Friday at 3:00 PM. This is Bama’s 28th tournament appearance and third in a row. Miami lost six of its last seven games to end the season. They were swept at Virginia and dropped two of three versus Notre Dame before being run-ruled 12-2 by Cal, resulting in an early exit from the ACC Championship. After finishing 31-24 overall, including a 15-14 conference record, this will be the Hurricanes’ 50th tournament appearance.

Miami has been to seven regionals, dating back to 2015, when it hosted four. However, the Hurricanes have not been to the College World Series since 2016. This is also the last time UM was regional champs. The Cardiac Canes have experienced first-round eliminations in their last four (2019, 2021, 2022, 2023) appearances. The program did not qualify in 2024.

The Golden Eagles (44-14, 24-6 Sunbelt), who are making their 21st all-time NCAA appearance and ninth-straight, will host their fourth regional, squaring off against Ivy League tournament champion Columbia (29-17, 16-5 Ivy League). As the 16th national seed, Southern Miss is the Sun Belt regular-season and tournament runner-up. The Lions, meanwhile, achieved their eighth tournament appearance, their sixth in the last 10 seasons.

Impressions

Pretty big news for Canes fans. There was some uncertainty with the evolving situation regarding the bubble teams, but the Hurricanes are back in it. This certainly boosts J.D. Arteaga, who’s in his second year as the team’s head coach, although it won’t silence his critics. Regionals are a minimum requirement in this town. It’s The U, after all. My initial impression is considerable optimism. Will Miami win at least one game? They most certainly can, two even. Will the Hurricanes advance to the Super Regional? That’s another matter. I will go over more in the upcoming preview.
