Miami, Florida – The Miami Hurricanes dropped a heartbreaker, losing 26-20 to the SMU Mustangs after Carson Beck threw an interception at the goal line. Up 20-17 with a little over a minute to go in regulation, Marquise Lightfoot was penalized for unnecessary roughness on fourth and nine at SMU’s 48. Both Lightfoot and Rueben Bain Jr. were charging towards the quarterback when the play was blown dead. Bain stopped, but Lightfoot made contact with the QB, resulting in the flag. The call gave the Mustangs an automatic first down and moved the chains to Miami’s 37. SMU ultimately made the 38-yard field goal, sending the game into overtime.

UM got the ball first in OT however, when Beck fired it up the middle looking for Malachi Toney on third and six, it went right into the hands of Ahmaad Moses, who already had one INT. T.J. Harden eventually scored the winning touchdown. Beck recorded 274 yards, including two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Mustangs’ victory is the program’s first win over a top-10 team in over 40 years, a day after Rhett Lashlee agreed to a two-year contract extension. Miami had another slow start on offense, managing 10 points in the first half.

Toney’s 47-yard punt return gave the Hurricanes excellent field position at SMU’s 9 late in the second. They only came away with three points. Furthermore, penalties remained a problem. UM committed 12 for 96 yards. They already had eight by halftime. Although the Canes played sloppily, the officiating was highly controversial. Xavier Lucas had forced a fumble on a sack early in the third period, with Bain recovering. Upon further review, the referees overturned the call, ruling it an incomplete pass. The only reason Kevin Jennings’ arm goes forward is from the hit from Lucas. At 10-2, Miami hosts Syracuse next weekend.

What a letdown. Barring some miracle, the loss has gutted the Canes’ chances at the CFP. UM has matched my two-loss prediction, and I’m certain they will lose at least one more. It seems inevitable the way they are playing. Jojo Trader got the long-awaited starting nod, filling in for CJ Daniels, who was ruled out for today’s game due to injury. Jojo caught five passes for 81 yards that included an impressive 36-yard strike, giving the Cardiac Canes the early 7-0 lead. However, he was also responsible for Beck’s first pick. Trader dropped the pass, allowing Moses to nab it. The Mustangs immediately cashed in with a 28-yard TD connection to Yamir Knight, tying it. Keelan Marion also got looks, totaling five receptions for 77 yards. Toney was the top receiver, catching nine of 13 passes for 70 yards. Mark Fletcher Jr. led the way on the ground, accumulating 16 carries for 84 yards.

Despite dominating time of possession (37:42), going 7-for-16 on third down, 2-for-2 in the red zone, and outproducing the Mustangs on total yardage, as I said, it came down to the turnover battle. SMU won that one, generating 13 points. The Hurricanes held their opponent to 23 rushing yards, but it meant nothing in the end as SMU ran over the defense in overtime. Lastly, the coaching was not good. The team remains sloppy and undisciplined. They kept running up the middle; there was no creativity, and fans were upset that coach Mario Cristobal took a knee with one timeout and 25 seconds left in regulation. I honestly see why he did it, although I must admit Cristobal played way too conservatively. Oh well, there’s a season still left to play.
