ODDS – Liberty -14

The FIU Panthers head to Virginia for arguably their most important game of the season this Saturday against the Liberty Flames. Liberty is currently riding a six-game winning streak and sits unbeaten in Conference USA.

This matchup pits two of Conference USA’s strongest scoring defenses against each other, setting the stage for a physical game where every possession, scoring chance, and defensive stop can be decisive. The Panthers do face a significant challenge against one of the most balanced teams.

FIU enters this game at 3-4, with two straight three-point losses in conference play. Liberty has already punched its ticket to a bowl game at 6-1 and is looking like a serious contender in the Conference USA Championship Game.

The Flames Have a Dangerous Rush Attack

The Flames average 222 rushing yards per game, giving them one of the nation’s top offenses. Liberty’s success this season has relied on its ability to run, control the tempo, and force opposing defenses to bring extra players to the box. Kam Davis leads the team with 583 total yards and averages 91 yards per game in CUSA play. All eyes will be on him in the backfield.

If Davis consistently wins the first-down battles, then the Flames dictate the pace of the game. This will then open opportunities for play-action passes and extended drives, while FIU’s offense watches from the bench. The Panthers will need to limit the damage without overworking themselves. This means controlled gap assignments, proper tackling, and wins at the line of scrimmage.

FIU’s Defense Faces its Biggest Test

FIU’s defense can be their saving grace if they go on the path to victory. Opponents have only scored on five of 19 red-zone possessions against the Panthers. Liberty is averaging 31.6 points per game; if they are limited to field goals instead of touchdowns, then that’s huge for FIU.

Deshawn Purdie has thrown for 1,226 yards without an interception for the Flames. He has shown he can take advantage of opportunities downfield. Makai Jackson is a threat at receiver who can stretch the field, with 540 yards this season. FIU must come in with a balanced plan to stop the run, prevent easy passes, and force Liberty into third-and-long.

JJ Kohl Faces Difficult Assignment

The Flames have held opponents below 20 points five times this season and have excelled at limiting scoring chances. JJ Kohl must make accurate throws and take advantage of any opportunity that’s handed. FIU averages around 251 passing yards per game, but sustaining drives against Liberty won’t be easy.

Negative plays, penalties, and failed third downs will work against the Panthers if they can’t win these battles. Kohl needs to lead this offense and keep the Flames guessing. Turnovers and stalled drives are not acceptable. FIU’s recipe for success is to complete quick throws, run well, and execute on early downs.

Devonte Lyons’ Performance Will Be Key

In recent weeks, Devonte Lyons has emerged as an important leader for FIU’s offense. He’s coming off a career-high 115-yard performance, and his 88.7 rushing yards per game rank third in Conference USA. Another successful performance won’t come easy, as the Flames allow just 115 rushing yards per game and have shown they can shut down offenses.

Lyons needs to give the Panthers steady gains if they want to stay ahead of the chains, sustain drives, and keep Liberty’s offense off the field. If he performs, the Flames’ defense will be humbled, and Kohl won’t be pressured as much. FIU will also need to be aggressive when they reach scoring range.

Who Will Win – FIU or Liberty?

With good reason, the Flames enter this contest as a heavyweight favorite. Winning six straight, Liberty has averaged more than 30 points per game and rosters a rushing attack that’s capable of wearing down defenses. If the Panthers can limit Davis and the Flames from flowing, this will be a closer game than anticipated.

Despite some close losses, FIU has shown it can compete with quality opponents, but Liberty’s home-field advantage, offensive balance, and defensive consistency might just be too much to contain. The Panthers’ offensive struggles are concerning against a defense that’s allowing just 14 points per game.

FIU will need to overcome their flaws. The Panthers did win their most recent meeting in November 2025, 34-27 in overtime. The Flames won the 2024 matchup 31-24 in overtime. Based on recent history, this game could very well have a dramatic finish. For FIU to pull off the upset, they will need to play a complete game, protect the football, and turn defensive stops into points.
