BMO Field- Inter Miami CF was triumphant in Toronto, winning 4-2 behind brilliant performances by Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul. The Argentine duo scored a goal and dished out two assists each. Emilio Ariztizabal scored a brace for Toronto.
Rodrigo De Paul stepped up for a rare free-kick attempt that initially crashed into the wall, but he reacted quickly and brilliantly volleyed the rebound into the net to give the Herons a 1–0 lead.
Three minutes after checking in, Sergio Reguilón sent a right-footed shot into the Toronto net to give Inter Miami a 3-0 lead. Lionel Messi delivered the pass into the box for the finish.
The legend himself, Lionel Messi, got on the scoresheet with a left-footed flick off a pass from Rodrigo De Paul into the box, giving the Herons a commanding 4-0 lead.
The Herons earned three valuable points on the road in Toronto. It was a strong overall performance, but the team was unable to secure the clean sheet.
Messi Magnificence
It never seems to fail. Lionel Messi continues to shatter records and make it look easy, as if it were something normal. His two assists and one goal versus Toronto made him the player to reach 100 goal contributions the fastest in MLS history. His brilliance on the pitch has spanned two decades, still shining and performing at a top level. His phenomenal career is beyond explanation. Even at this late stage, where the end is near, Messi is magnificence personified.
After Javier Mascherano’s departure, Guillermo Hoyos was named head coach of Inter Miami CF, continuing a trend of bringing in coaches who have a familiarity or connection with Lionel Messi. When you have the sport’s biggest icon and moneymaker on your squad, it’s prudent to ensure he feels at home. Hoyos is known as Messi’s football “godfather” due to his relationship with Lionel dating back to his early years at Barcelona’s La Masia.
Of the three coaches during Messi’s tenure in Miami, Hoyos appears to have by far the strongest emotional ties, and this is evident in his post-match press conferences. A self-described “habitually positive” coach, Hoyos has offered some interesting takes and often avoids addressing questions that single out any individual player’s performance.
When asked why some of the higher-profile players did not come out to answer questions after the 4–3 loss to rival Orlando City—after leading 3–0 at home—Hoyos offered this nugget:
Silence is the ally of growth. There are moments when you have to maintain silence. It’s alot of prudence and respect to not say things you shouldn’t say. It’s prudence and respect towards the press.
After the match against Toronto, Hoyos seemed to subtly suggest to the media that they be less critical of a player of the likes of Lionel Messi,
That class of players like Messi, Rodri as well, guys like Suárez, and successive players like that, we have to protect them and take care of them, Why? Because they fill stadiums. The real protagonists in all this are the players. It’s as clear as that.
Without a doubt, players are the stars of the show in sports; no one attends games to watch the coach or the owners. Lionel Messi is the brightest star of them all by far, but that in itself does not make him exempt from criticism. In my view, Messi represents a rare blend of consistent brilliance on the pitch and an exemplary lifestyle off it.
I believe Guillermo Hoyos had the right intentions, but his words were taken out of context. He comes from a different football culture, from a country where the sport is lived and felt deeply. Football is part of the identity, and there tends to be more forgiveness toward the actions of players who have delivered cherished memories. I don’t think he meant for reporters not to criticize Lionel Messi, but instead to encourage appreciation for the iconic player the team has and to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Hoyos’s positive, reflective, and at times aloof takes make him more than just a coach; he’s a football philosopher.
