Empower Field-Lionel Messi scored a brace to lead Inter Miami to a 3–2 victory over the Colorado Rapids in front of a record-setting crowd of 75,824 on Saturday afternoon. The Herons built a 2–0 lead in the first half, only to see Colorado erase it within four minutes early in the second half. Rafael Navarro and Darren Yapi each found the back of the net, exposing Miami’s defense.

The Herons flew high in Colorado, coming away with three big points on the road.
Hoyos Shaky Debut
Guillermo Hoyos took charge of Inter Miami for the first time on Saturday afternoon in Colorado, making two notable changes to the lineup typically deployed by Javier Mascherano. Facundo Mura and Gonzalo Luján were inserted at left and right back, respectively, but the adjustments did little to stabilize a defense that appeared out of sync for much of the match.
The usual starters, Sergio Reguilón and Ian Fray, provide more attacking prowess while offering comparable defensive ability, and their absence was noticeable. If not for Lionel Messi’s late heroics, Hoyos’ debut could have ended far differently.
Inter Miami was outplayed for long stretches, losing the possession battle 61.1% to 38.9% and being outshot 15–5 by Colorado. Efficiency proved decisive, however, as the Herons converted all three of their shots on target into goals—ultimately turning what could have been a difficult debut into a winning one for Hoyos.
Defensive Miscues Again
Inter Miami’s aggressive style of play continues to leave its back line exposed to counterattacks, with the center backs often pushed high up the pitch and out of position to cover central gaps. The midfield has offered little protection, frequently forced into recovery runs as opponents break forward after turnovers.
Despite holding a 2–0 lead at halftime, the Herons maintained their high line and relentless pressure in the second half. While the intent is commendable, it has repeatedly exposed defensive shortcomings—namely a lack of pace, cohesion, and compactness.
A more adaptable approach may better serve Miami moving forward. Adjusting tactics to match in-game situations, rather than maintaining a full-throttle style throughout, could help the Herons protect leads and find greater balance.
