Miami, Florida – The third-ranked Miami Hurricanes are preparing for the biggest game of the season, a road trip battle against the Florida State Seminoles. Rivalry week is in full swing as both sides attempt to shut out the noise while their respective fan bases antagonize one another with trash talk. The week 6 primetime showdown with No. 18 FSU is the best matchup across college football. Miami kicks off its ACC schedule hoping to remain undefeated. Riding in 4-0, the Hurricanes are coming off a bye week after defeating the Florida Gators 26-7.

Florida State, meanwhile, checks in at 3-1 overall, hoping to bounce back from the surprise 46-38 loss to Virginia last weekend. Mike Norvell leads the program in his sixth season and is looking to regain prominence after finishing the 2024 campaign with a 2-10 record, the team’s worst since 1974. The previous meeting was all Canes with UM rocking FSU 36-14, snapping the Seminoles’ three-game winning streak. Before that, Miami won four straight, breaking a long seven-game dominance by Florida State. Coral Gables leads the all-time series 36-33. Although the Hurricanes are the favorites, no one is taking this high-stakes clash lightly. Aside from the opportunity to claim the Florida Cup, this has implications for the postseason and the Heisman race. Let’s take a look at the players who can prove key to the outcome, including a familiar foe.
Florida State
Thomas Castellanos

Fans will remember Thomas Castellanos from his days at Boston College. Back in 2023, a Tyler Van Dyke led Hurricanes squad thumped the Eagles 45-20 to end the season. Castellanos threw for 151 yards in the air and rushed for 130 yards, scoring a touchdown via both methods, but got picked off twice. Now a senior, Tommy has accumulated 848 yards, eight TDs split evenly, and three INTs. Shut him down, and this will be a wrap.
Duce Robinson

By far the best wide receiver on the team, Duce Robinson has tallied 17 receptions for 346 yards and a trio of TDs. The junior is Castellanos’ favorite target, making nine catches for 147 yards against Virginia, including a touchdown. Robinson recorded more receptions than nearly all the other players combined. Averaging 20 yards a catch, Miami knows who to target Saturday night.
Earl Little Jr.

A five-star prospect coming out of high school, Earl Little Jr. was a transfer from Alabama. The Fort Lauderdale junior is a talented defensive back, leading the unit with 28 tackles, 11 of those solo, complemented by one pass breakup and an interception. He knows how to read the game and possesses some toughness to complement it. The offense better do its due diligence, or it’ll find itself frustrated.

Another pivotal moment has arrived. Forget about the Heisman race or the Florida Cup. For a lot of fans, this is the game of the year. The date that’s circled illustrates a must-win for any fan of any program. You always want to beat your rival, no matter the outcome for the rest of the season. Carson Beck understands this and will go in full tilt in an effort to bounce back from his worst performance of the season, when he was held to 160 yards and threw an INT. Expect a trio of TDs and at least 210 yards.
CJ Daniels

Miami’s number two receiver is due after disappearing versus the Florida Gators. In that contest, CJ Daniels caught four passes for 16 yards. That ain’t good. The weather was partly to blame. Despite those circumstances, there was a very catchable play he failed to finish, which could’ve led to a big chunk of yardage at the very least. Beck will require his circus catches, especially since the team wishes to remain the top dog of the ACC. I’m feeling 80 yards and a touchdown.
Rueben Bain Jr.

This Hurricane is turning some heads to the point that he’s within the Heisman conversation. He’s certainly in mine. Leading the way with 22 tackles, two sacks, a broken up pass, an interception, and lastly a forced fumble, Rueben Bain Jr. is an explosive, high-impact edge rusher who grades out as one of the best in the country. The fact that a defensive player is being considered for the accolade is impressive. Castellanos will learn why Saturday night. He could break into my top five.
Prediction
This is Miami’s first road game of the season, and it’s in highly hostile territory. The place will be loud. Their opponents are looking to trip up the Canes and knock them down a notch. They’re angry for last year’s loss and they are pissed after losing to Virginia. UM won’t give them that satisfaction. If they can contain Thomas Castellanos and Duce Robinson, especially, win the turnover war, and knock out the crowd early with successful drives, the Hurricanes will run the Seminoles off the field. Miami wins 34-20.
