Miami, Florida – The Miami Hurricanes clinched an important weekend series victory against the Louisville Cardinals thanks to Alex Sosa in the home finale. Sosa not only went 4-for-5 with two runs, a stolen base, and the titular two long balls and five runs batted in, but he also made his debut at first base in the 10-8 win. The catcher-turned-first baseman made a few plays, including gloving Griffin Crain’s liner in the third and successfully fielding a hard grounder from Tague Davis during the eighth. Sosa wasn’t the sole standout. Dylan Dubovik and Vance Sheahan also homered. Dubovik went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Sheahan made his one hit count.

The series’s high-scoring nature continued in the rubber match as fans witnessed five home runs, four of those by UM. They were all two-run shots. Furthermore, both sides saw their entire starting lineup get on base. Despite having a depleted bullpen due to Friday night’s tough loss, the Canes saw freshmen relievers Sebastian Santos-Olson and Jack Durso step up. Santos-Olson took over in the third when UM starter AJ Ciscar was knocked out after allowing six runs (five earned). Sebastian would pitch two and a third innings, holding the Cardinals to a hit. Durso replaced TJ Coats, who gave up two runs on three hits in two innings of relief, fanning Crain and Jimmy Nugent before retiring Davis. The Relief Corps efforts culminated in Lyndon Glidewell striking out the side, all looking, for his fourth save.

Zion Rose led off with a double in the first, coming home through Crain’s bunt single, giving the red birds an early 1-0 lead. Sosa immediately responded, launching his 14th dinger of the season, making it 2-1. Ciscar found himself in trouble the next frame. Lucas Moore hit a lead-off double, complemented by Kade Elam’s single. Louisville tied it on the George Baker groundout. The situation grew dicey when Rose hit an RBI single after Ciscar beaned Zach Davis. Crain pushed Louisville’s fourth run on the groundout.

UM got one back in the bottom of the second thanks to Michael Torres hitting a run-inducing single. Just when it appeared that Ciscar was going to turn away the Cards in the third, Louisville scored regardless on a strikeout that turned into a wild pitch. Baker whiffed, but the ball got past Alonzo Alvarez, permitting Nugent to cross the plate. AJ’s inning did not improve when he walked in the opposition’s sixth run. The Cardiac Canes continued to fight as Sosa brought his team to within a run, slamming his second homer of the afternoon at the bottom of the third. Dubovik helped Miami retake the lead 7-6.

After two scoreless innings, Davis hammered his third dinger of the series (and 33rd of the season), off Coats, putting the Cardinals back in the driver’s seat. Miami kept on mashing courtesy of Sheahan, homering on a laser down the left field line. Sosa continued to roll, knocking in Max Galvin to help the Canes extend their lead and ultimately win.

Impressions

Both teams scored 32 runs, but it’s the Hurricanes that come away with the series. I wish they had swept. UM is now 35-15 overall and 15-12 in ACC play, closing out their home schedule with a 25-9 record. One opponent remains: #14 Florida State. A double bye in the ACC Championship is still possible, although it requires the Hurricanes to play a level of complementary baseball not seen in weeks. This season has really flown by. It feels like it started only recently. Congratulations on a job well done by the relievers who rose to the occasion and to Alex Sosa. He was my weekend MVP, going 9-for-13, hitting a .692 batting average that included three home runs and 9 RBIs. For several, this will be the last time they play at the Light, glad they did it with a win.
