Hammerheads Eighth Inning Comeback

CLEARWATER, FL – Jake Clemente was on a mission today, striking out a career-high of nine batters, but the Hammerheads couldn’t provide him with run support. They struggled to score runs for the majority of the game. The Jupiter Hammerheads were able to beat the Clearwater Threshers 6-5 thanks to a six-run eighth-inning comeback.

Jake Clemente Strikes Out Nine

Clemente gave up a run in the second, third, and fourth innings, and his command was a bit off at times in the game. The Threshers only managed four hits against him, but he also gave up three walks.
He was putting in a workout with just four innings of work, throwing a total of 88 pitches, which was more than any other player in the game. Only 49 pitches accounted for strikes, barely more than half of his total amount.

What got everyone’s attention, though, were his nine strikeouts. His previous season-high was eight just two outings ago on June 9th at Daytona. Clemente got five strikeouts on the fastball, three on the changeup, and one on the curveball.
Overall, he was pretty dominant in the game. Clearwater was never able to fully figure out his pitches. Luis Cesar tossed a scoreless fifth, allowing three hits. Juan De La Cruz allowed an RBI single and struck out a batter in the sixth.
Julio Mendez improved his record to 5-0. The 21-year-old southpaw gave up a solo shot in the seventh, but he struck out each of the other three hitters he faced.

Eighth Inning Comeback

Prior to the eighth inning, the Hammerheads just weren’t following through at the plate. They were outhitting the Threshers but couldn’t drive in the runs.

The best example came in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and no outs. Then, Julio Henriquez, Jose Monserrate, and Luis Arana struck out.

The eighth inning certainly was a magical one. Victor Ortega started the rally by hitting his 10th double on a grounder into right field. Luis Cova scored all the way from first.

Then, Jose Monserrate scored both Ortega and Henriquez after he connected on a liner into center field for his first triple of the season. At that point, Jupiter was down 5-3 with just one out and a lot of wiggle room to play with.

Next man up was Miami Marlins prospect, Luis Arana, who grounded out but was able to score Monserrate. It was now only a one-run game, and after Carter Johnson singled, Clearwater decided to make a pitching change.

Echedry Vargas made their decision costly with one swing of the bat. He seized the moment and crushed his fifth home run of the season into left field for the go-ahead run. What smelled like a guaranteed victory just a few short minutes ago put the Threshers into panic mode.

The Hammerheads’ 2/11 statistic with runners in scoring position isn’t pretty, but those two hits were the biggest of the game.

Luis Ramirez earned his first save of 2026 after tossing the final two frames. The eighth inning was prolonged due to command issues, and the bases were loaded, but he recorded a big out. Ramirez allowed no hits and three walks on two punchouts.
