Miami, Florida – The five-run surge was just what the Miami Hurricanes needed to beat the Troy Trojans 10-5 in their first game of the Gainesville Regional. Jake Ogden and Max Galvin kicked off the big inning with back-to-back one-out doubles. After Derek Williams and Alex Sosa walked, Alonzo Alvarez produced an RBI single, making it 7-5 Canes. Dylan Dubovik drove in the next run via a sacrifice fly, with Brandon DeGoti delivering the final blow, smacking a two-run double. UM reliever Lyndon Glidewell finished off the Trojans in the ninth, pitching two innings of relief to help Miami advance to the winner’s bracket against the Florida Gators, who outlasted Rider 8-7 in the afternoon game.

The Hurricanes had jumped to a 4-0 lead back in the third inning, thanks to home runs from Vance Sheahan and Williams. While it was Sheahan’s third jack of the season, Williams recorded his 16th. Troy, however, did not go away. Sean Darnell singled down the right field line, plating Blake Cavill to put the Trojans on the board. Friday ace Rob Evans labored in the fifth, giving up three hits in a row, including Cavill’s two-run double. Evans pitched five frames, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking two, and striking out four. Jack Durso took over in relief, tossing two scoreless innings, holding the opposition to a mere hit. Aside from the bullpen, the defense also put up a solid performance, particularly from Alvarez, who picked off two runners.

Williams drew a walk and then pounced on a wild pitch during the seventh, which also included an errant throw, allowing him to cross the plate to make it 5-3, Miami. Momentum swung back towards Troy when Drew Nelson tied up for the Trojans, lifting a two-run blast in the eighth off Glidewell. The Cardiac Canes responded, ultimately putting away the Trojans.

Despite the late-inning drama, the Hurricanes are off to a good start. As expected, the Gators held off Rider, setting up the highly anticipated matchup of the regional. Miami will be facing SEC Pitcher of the Year Aidan King. The right-handed sophomore owns a 2.68 ERA and razor-sharp 0.98 WHIP, going 8-2 in 15 starts, holding opposing hitters to a .204 batting average. King faced Miami earlier in the season on February 28, but was pulled in the third, allowing three runs on two hits. He did not factor in the contest, fanning three, walking one, and beaning two. Regardless, UF ultimately won 8-4. As I mentioned in the preview, this is where the team will need to play a level of baseball not seen for much of the year. And they will have to do it without Daniel Cuvet.
AJ Ciscar (11-6, 4.45 ERA) will be the starter. Although Georgia Tech roughed up Ciscar in the ACC tournament, he delivered a seven-inning quality gem against Florida State. Additionally, the righty had a great outing against the Gators back in February, throwing seven deep, surrendering four runs (three earned) on five hits, striking out six, and issuing no walks. Can he do it again? The winner here will be in an excellent position to clinch their ticket to the super regionals.
