Looking to get back to .500, the Panthers had their work cut out for them tonight vs the Bearkats. Sam Houston has won nine of their last 10 games and is currently sitting in second place in C-USA (19-8). The team’s first matchup ended with a 76-63 win for the Bearkats, where they forced FIU to shoot 29% from the floor.

Sam Houston stole the show in the first half, opening up with a 16-0 lead before Eric Dibami finally got the Panthers on the board. SHSU has been on fire from 3-point range all season, sitting second in 3-point % in C-USA.
The Bearkats continued to pour it down from three, shooting 7/12 behind the arc by the half. While FIU could not get much to go in tonight, shooting just 2/10 from three.
Larry Olayinka would throw down a huge fastbreak dunk to get the Panthers hyped, leading to a Julian Mackey 3-pointer that brought them within 10. FIU had a couple surges of life, but would enter the first half down 50-31 vs Sam Houston.
Corey Stephenson had a great first half, earning his middy’s in the soft spots of the Bearkats’ defense. After dropping game one of this series, FIU wanted to turn things around and maintain C-USA tournament eligibility.
Freshman guard Jacob Walker led his team with 11 first-half points while SHSU looked to be closing in on another win. Sam Houston sits two games behind Liberty for first place and could close the gap with a victory tonight.

Sam Houston grew its 19-point lead to as much as 34 points by the game’s end. The Bearkats’ season leading scorer would take charge, Po’Boigh King shot perfectly tonight, knocking down seven shots, three of them from behind the arc, finishing with 18 points.
With King sitting early in this game, Jacob Walker had his time to shine, leading the team with 20 points and winning his fifth game as the starter (5-1 as a starter). Corey Stephenson led FIU with 18 points, but a team season-low 18% from three doomed the Panthers.
FIU will travel to the Thomas Assembly Center to face Louisiana Tech on February 28th for its final regular-season road game of the year.
It’s a huge opportunity for FIU to bounce back and remain eligible for the C-USA tournament. The final tournament spots are close, with FIU, New Mexico, UTEP, and Delaware separated by one game. With just a few games left, the Panthers must win its final three games to keep its tournament hopes alive.
