Malachi Toney out indefinately in major blow to Miami Hurricanes

Miami, Florida – The injury bug has now claimed Malachi Toney in a shocking turn of events, devastating the No. 1 Miami Hurricanes and their postseason hopes. Three days before a crucial matchup with Notre Dame, UM lost a key offensive player. Heck, outside fellow Heisman candidate Darian Mensah, he IS the offense. Toney suffered a high ankle sprain at practice and will undergo surgery, hopefully allowing him to return for the College Football Playoff. He had been dealing with a lower-leg ailment since Week 3’s Wake Forest game. Considering the struggles of the Cardiac Canes’ secondary, it cannot be overstated how massive a blow this is. Toney had 73 receptions for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Embodying a true next-man-up mentality, the WR corps must collectively step up its game. Mensah will either spread the ball around or look for a new top target. That means the time to shine has come for Daylyn Upshaw, Elija Lofton, Vance Spafford, Somourian Wingo, and Vandrevius Jacobs. Above all, this is especially true for Cooper Barkate. Last year, he recorded 72 receptions for 1,106 yards and seven touchdowns. Considering he transferred over with Mensah as close teammates, I want to see the Duke tandem everybody was talking about.

Despite the loss, the Miami Hurricanes still have their Heisman frontrunner and their robust running game. The Hurricanes can wear down their opponent with Mark Fletcher Jr. and Javian Mallory, but they will be pressured to air it out if they fall behind substantially. Which brings me to my next point. Defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman needs to realign the secondary if the Canes want any chance of a victory. They’re really underdogs now. This truly is Notre Dame’s elimination game. If they fail to beat a depleted Miami at home, their season is over. Although a loss is not fatal for UM, the last three games of the season are no longer a sure thing. Buckle up.
