MIAMI, FL – After the dominant display of defense against Delaware a couple of days ago, FIU Women’s Basketball almost outdid itself. Against a team right behind them in the standings, the Panthers handled the Liberty Flames by a score of 66-45 as they took care of business in their final game at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center this season.
On Senior Day, the Panthers pulled no punches early on in a historic first quarter. FIU only gave up four single points off a pair of shots with about 40 seconds to go. Otherwise, Liberty was 0-7 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Panthers cashed in from beyond the arc, going 3-4.
END OF THE FIRST QUARTER. FIU LEADS LIBERTY 24-4. 🙀
We saw an outstanding defensive effort by @FIUWBB against Delaware a couple days ago, holding them to 36 points.
But they gave up eight points to Delaware in the first quarter. Today? Just four. #FIU | #Panthers | #PawsUp https://t.co/c9IucExUyX

It did seem like FIU took its foot off the gas in the second quarter, only managing six points. This allowed the Flames to catch up to some extent, but the Panthers still held a comfortable lead at halftime, 30-17.
Out of the break, the Panthers escalated their performance in the first quarter, turning up the heat on offense. They attacked the paint while cashing in on free throws, 16 total up to this point.
Nothing Like A Stress-Free Win
With a comfortable 50-28 lead entering the final frame, it was smooth sailing from here on out. All in all, the Panthers connected on seven three-point shots and recorded more rebounds, assists, and steals than the Flames.
Fittingly, senior guard Parris Atkins had a phenomenal performance on Senior Day. With 25 points, five assists, and three steals, she led the way for FIU in what will be her final performance at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center. Rhema Collins wasn’t too far behind with a double-double – 16 points and 10 rebounds.
FIU wraps up with a 12-4 record at home this season, while they have a 17-9 overall record, and are 10-5 in CUSA. They’ll head on a three-game road trip to close out the regular season, starting in Springfield against the Missouri State Bears on Thursday, February 26th at 7:30pm.
