Miami, Florida – Alex Sosa mashed his fourth home run of the year, a grand slam, as the Hurricanes kept on rolling, routing the Lafayette Leopards 15-2. Despite having one hit all evening, the NC State transfer drove in nearly half of Miami’s runs, two via bases-loaded walks. On the mound, Friday night ace AJ Ciscar produced a quality start, tossing six frames of two-run ball, matching his career-high strikeout total of 9. With the win, No. 23 UM improves to 6-0, taking the first of a four-game series.

After Ciscar escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second, the bats started to give run support. Derek Williams led off with his fifth double of the season, followed by Alonzo Alvarez’s walk. Brylan West then put up the first run with an RBI hit. Fabio Peralta made it 2-0 on the fielder’s choice at second base. Jake Ogden completed the three-run effort with an RBI single, plating Freshman Jailen Watkins, who reached on another fielder’s choice and recorded the first steal of his collegiate career.
Down early, Lafayette responded with an RBI double in the third. Matt Colella hit it to left-center, finding the gap to end the shutout. Ogden came back for more in the fourth, scratching his second RBI of the night with a single to right-center. He went 3-for-4, scoring two runs and driving in three, while swiping two bases. Miami tacked on two more thanks to back-to-back bases-loaded walks by Sosa and Williams. Teddy Cashman kept his team in the game with an RBI double in the sixth, cutting into UM’s lead. Walks plagued Lafayette all night, and Sosa made the Leopards pay dearly with a sixth-inning grand slam as part of an eight-run barrage. Three more were walked in, complemented by a hit-by-pitch. When the inning finally ended, the Hurricanes were in total control, leading 14-2. Dylan Dubovik’s homer to deep left was the icing on the cake.

Miami took advantage of Lafayette’s pitching struggles for the expected win. The question remains, can they do it three more times, including a double-header on Saturday to finish the week 6-0? Ciscar was better on the mound. However, he did hit four batters. I can’t wait to see his start versus the Florida Gators. Lafayette recorded an eye-popping 11 walks, and the score could’ve been a lot worse since UM stranded just as many runners. On to the next one.
Gus Bus Award
Sosa leads the team with four dingers, and the latest is a grand slam. Enough said.
You’re Killing Me Smalls
Mikey Torres was the lone starter of tonight’s lineup who struggled, going hitless through three at-bats.
