Miami, Florida – Daniel Cuvet kicked off the Hattiesburg regional with a three-run blast as AJ Ciscar commanded from the mound, resulting in a 5-3 thriller. The tournament opener came right down to the wire with Kade Snell nearly walking off the Miami Hurricanes. With two runners aboard, Michael Torres made the game-winning catch at the wall, sending his team into the winner’s bracket. Ciscar weaved a quality gem, allowing three earned runs on six hits through seven innings of work. The true freshman struck out eight and walked one in the 97-pitch performance. Danny Dingers reintroduced himself with a homer to right field, gifting the Canes an early lead, one they would never relinquish. However, Alabama didn’t make it easy for them.

Down 4-0 thanks to Renzo Gonzalez’s third-inning RBI single, the Crimson Tide strung together hits, scoring three in the fourth. Snell got beaned to start the inning. With one out, Bama manufactured back-to-back hits, eventually scoring their first run on the Brady Neal groundout. Brennen Norton doubled to left, making it 4-3. After UM got out of the inning, Max Galvin homered to right-center, keeping the SEC foe at arm’s length. Carson Fischer took over in the eighth, however, Alabama threatened, causing coach J.D. Arteaga to bring in Rob Evans, who punched out Neal, stranding two. Things got real dicey in the ninth.

UM closer Brian Walters retired the first two hitters but found himself in a fierce 13-pitch battle with Bryce Fowler, who smacked it down first. Renzo managed to get in front of the well-hit ball but couldn’t quite corral it, resulting in an error. Justin Lebron was then plunked, setting up Snell and Torres’ heart-pounding play at the wall. Cuvet wrapped up the day going 2-for-4, including a double, a home run, and three RBIs. Galvin went 2-for-5, driving in a run. Gonzalez finished 1-for-1 with an RBI, drawing three walks. Miami faces the winner between Southern Miss and Columbia Saturday night, with Griffin Hugus already announced as the starter.

Impressions
That was an important win. The Cardiac Canes continue to have a reputation for being a hazard to fans’ health. They managed to avoid Carson Ozmer and might evade JB Middleton if the Lions pull off an upset. The work is not done, the stakes have been raised, no matter the opponent tomorrow. Lastly, a big hat’s off to Ciscar, the kid was phenomenal against a dangerous SEC lineup. The bullpen didn’t break, although I wish Walters hadn’t raised everyone’s blood pressure. Onward to the next phase!
