Braves Open Up the Floodgates in Dominating Win Over Marlins

MIAMI, FL – In yesterday’s contest, the Miami Marlins were tied at 2 until Josh Simpson allowed 9 runs in the final inning. With the series win on the line today, the Fish were seeking to put that game behind them. However, yesterday’s game was only a glimpse of what was yet to come today. Ryan Gusto undeniably had the worst game for any Marlins starting pitcher this season. The Atlanta Braves opened up the floodgates in a dominating win over the Marlins, 12-1.

Same Old Drama

The command was an issue for Gusto the entire long. Of 96 pitches, just 56 of them were strikes. When he missed, he was off completely. It was noticeable that he would miss high and away to most batters he faced. On a few occasions, he missed the inside of the plate, close enough to hit a batter.

Gusto did just that here in the 3rd inning. Ronald Acuna Jr. has a known history of getting hit by pitches from Marlin pitchers, particularly by Jose Urena. He reignited those moments after Ryan Gusto threw a pitch on the inside part of the plate. Acuna Jr. had some words for him, and the benches cleared for both squads.

If that wasn’t enough drama already, both sides received warnings from the home plate umpire. Braves manager, Brian Stinker, came out of the dugout and expressed his frustration with the hit by pitch. He immediately got tossed from the game.

Not a Whole Lot of Gusto for the Marlins Today

Gusto had a pitcher’s nightmare today.

On the third pitch of the game, he gave up a lead-off home run to Jurickson Profar. That was only a preview of what was yet to come.

Matt Olson got the Braves offense going with a two-run shot in the 3rd inning, his 20th of the season, making it a 3-0 ballgame. Olson’s home run traveled 426 feet with an exit velocity of 109.3 MPH. It was the beginning of a home run fest for Atlanta.

The inning would continue to get worse for Ryan Gusto. Ozzie Albies hit a three-run home run, putting the Braves up 6-0. Albies had a solid day at the plate and wasn’t done yet.

He gave Gusto more trouble in the 4th inning with a two-run single. Albies added some extra hustle on the bases and reached second as the throw from right field was coming home. He had 5 RBI in the game by then.

Michael Harris II was another hitter with a fantastic game. His RBI single in the 4th was the icing on the cake for Ryan Gusto, who left after allowing 9 runs in the game. Harris II then hit a two-run home run in the 6th off Freddy Tarnok. He drove in three runs at the plate.

Profar added to his success with his second homerun of the ballgame in the 7th inning, making it 12-1.

Impressions

The only bright spot for Miami was Derek Hill hitting a double in the 5th inning and taking the zero off the runs column for the team.

From the beginning of the game, the Braves had this game under control. Ryan Gusto’s velocity was down in the game, and that played a role in why they took advantage of him. If the ball was in the zone, the Braves would swing and either foul off the ball or put it in play.

It’s not as if a particular pitch of his was the target of Atlanta’s successes. Each of his pitches was victim to the Braves taking good swings. It will be interesting to see what the Marlins do with him before his next start. After three straight losses with the team, it raises the question of whether they will either send him down to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp or they’ll try using him out of the bullpen.

They faced the daunting task of getting past yesterday’s crushing loss, and now they have to add this blowout loss on top of it. It won’t get any easier as the Marlins face the Mets in Queens tomorrow for a four-game series.
