MTSU delivers the heartbreaker in OT vs FIU Women’s Soccer in the first round of the Conference-USA tournament. A rematch of last year’s first-round matchup ended a little differently this time around. All night, both teams fought tooth and nail, neither giving up a single inch.

Forcing overtime, FIU put up a fierce fight but fell just short, losing 1–0 to Middle Tennessee. Despite a strong defensive effort and several key saves, the Panthers couldn’t find the back of the net. The Blue Raiders would go on to capitalize in overtime and advance to the semifinals to play Missouri State.

Opening Whistle Dominance

From the opening whistle, Middle Tennessee came out more aggressively, pressing high and forcing FIU’s back line to stay alert. An early scoring opportunity nearly set up the Raiders’ first goal, but FIU goalkeeper Odaliana Gomez responded with a brilliant diving save to keep the match scoreless.

Odaliana stepped into her first start of the season for FIU, immediately taking on a constant stream of attacks. However, she responded with poise and resiliency, making several key saves to deny MTSU’s attack in the first half.

The Blue Raiders’ best shot attempt in the first half came from Emma Petersen, with a strong dribble into the box, setting up an open goal, but she couldn’t get it to go. Minutes later, MTSU’s Taijah Fraser fired a shot from close range, only for Odaliana to deny it with another impressive diving stop.

With 13minutes left in the half, Jaleah McPherson lined up a free kick, giving the Panthers their best chance of the half, but the Blue Raiders cleared it. At the break, the score remained 0–0, with both teams not wavering.

After Regulation, Deadlocked at 0-0

FIU Head Coach Matt Dunn noted that his team showed some early game jitters in the first half and expects his team to settle in the last 45 minutes. The Panthers created more consistent chances around the 60-minute mark. As Jayden Boelter had a shot blocked & Chinatsu Kaio forced a tough save for the MTSU goalkeeper.

With 30 minutes remaining, FIU led 8–6 in total shots, but neither side could break through. As the regulation counted down to triple zeros, frustration was evident on both benches. Both teams exchanged late looks but couldn’t finish, sending the match into overtime still deadlocked at 0–0.

The Heartbreaker is Delivered

The start of overtime brought a heightened urgency from FIU and MTSU, with every possession, slide, and shot carrying the weight of the season. But with just three minutes remaining in the extra period, the Blue Raiders found their moment of brilliance. Hannah Murphy would seal the victory for the Blue Raiders and advance to the semi-finals round of the tournament.

While the loss stings, FIU can take pride in its competitive spirit and defensive tenacity, traits that will carry into next year’s campaign. With players like Montlene Dymond, Chinatsu Kaio, Grace Morris, Jayden Boelter, and Roxy Brewer all being named to the C-USA All-Conference teams. The Panthers will aim to make another run at the C-USA championship in 2026.
