Carson Beck sets new record as UM dismantles Bethune-Cookman

Miami, Florida – Miami was in the driver’s seat as Carson Beck’s record-setting performance led the Hurricanes to a decisive 45-3 win over Bethune-Cookman. With 15 straight completed passes, Beck has set a new single-game record, surpassing Vinny Testaverde’s 14 set in 1986 vs. Oklahoma. UM’s starting QB was given a breather late in the third quarter in favor of backup Emory Williams. Beck finished the evening completing 22 of 24 passes for 267 yards and two touchdowns. He has gone 185 consecutive passes without an interception. Williams was eight of 12 for 77 yards.

The Hurricanes produced a total of 543 yards, going four for six on 3rd down and five for five in the red zone. Freshman Malachi Toney continued to see action, tallying six receptions for 80 yards. CJ Daniels kept showing his skills with five catches for 73 yards and two TDs. Mark Fletcher Jr. led from the ground, producing 86 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Girard Pringle Jr. and CharMar Brown also recorded scores, rushing for 36 and 35 yards, respectively. On defense, Miami caged the Cats, forcing two turnovers and holding them to 191 yards.

Storming the Wildcats

Wesley Bissainthe was ejected on the opening drive for targeting. Bissainthe made a hard stop on Alihaja Scott Jr., during Timmy McClain’s six-yard pass on 3rd and 7 from Bethune’s 28-yard line. Despite the penalty, the Wildcats failed to convert, punting the ball away. The Hurricanes didn’t waste time scoring on their first possession. Carson Beck hit CJ Daniels for the eye-catching 40-yard touchdown, giving the Canes the early 7-0 advantage. UM got on the board again later in the quarter, this time with a ground attack into the endzone. Mark Fletcher Jr. weaved his way for the 16-yard rushing touchdown, capping off the 74-yard drive.

CharMar Brown joined in on the fun, recording a two-yard rushing TD, cushioning the lead. Juan Dominguez got his team on the board with a 32-yard field goal, but Miami ended the half with Daniels’ second touchdown. Fletcher buried the opposition with his second rushing TD to open the third quarter as UM took a commanding 35-3 lead. Bethune-Cookman’s best shot at a touchdown resulted in an interception midway through the final period. Bryce Fitzgerald intercepted the pass intended for Maleek Huggins on fourth and goal, keeping BCU’s touchdown drought going. Pringle’s 30-yard score and Bert Auburn’s 31-yard field goal were icing on the cake.

How did it go

My prediction of 59-6 was off, but I did anticipate the Wildcat’s failure to mark a touchdown correctly. So how did it go the rest of the way? Toney didn’t get a touchdown, unfortunately, while Fletcher came up short on the centennial mark. Rueben Bain Jr., meanwhile, recorded three tackles, including a sack that doubled as a tackle-for-loss, and a forced fumble. We can consider that a menace. Bethune-Cookman utilized both quarterbacks, with McClain avoiding throwing an interception. He did cough up the ball. Cam’Ron Ransom, however, made two throws, and one was a pick. Javon Ross and Marqui Johnson were irrelevant Saturday night as expected. Overall, the way I saw this playing out was largely intact. The upcoming South Florida game will be tricky.
